Timer to close game
It is possible to put a timer on a game so that it closes after 60 minutes
Thanks

Not within Steam at least. I suppose, this is about limiting kids screentime, right?
Sure, you could go with something like a timer set within your operating system, that shuts down all running programs at a set time, or even a timed power supply, but that would appear a little drastic. Also sudden shutdowns could harm the game progress, or, less likely, the files.

I would tend towards the classical solution: A mechanical alarm clock, that goes off loud enough to be heard all around the house.

Thanks for the reply. Yes is for the kid.

Steam doesn't have that function.

Microsoft seems to have an app to do something like that. I've never used it. (just found via google)

Just bop em on the head and tell em to do their homework.

Set a real clock on alarm.
And set it to a few minutes before the time.
That way the kid has time to close the game in time without missing something.

Better to pick some app to do graceful shutdown and not force shutdown.
Depend on timing, force shutdown may cause corrupt save data.

There was a guy on the old forums here (who was a friend of mine iirc) - haven't seen him for ages. He edeveloped a "net nanny" like uitiltiy for steam so you could do just this.

I wish I could remember what it was called and what happened to it (and him).

But yeah aside from this, just use a real physical alarm clock. If you think that's not "hard" enough to stop play, then you can simply be more pedantic as a parent. It's really simple.

The important thing is not primarily to shut off the game, but to learn to stop something in the right time.
On your own.
(Timer for the frame, set a bit ahead to learn how to handle time and game)

If the parents are the ones who shut down the game without listening, all that happens is one day, this obstacle is gone. While the important lesson was not learnt.

I forgot about shutdown command.

From Command Prompt, you can set shutdown after 60min

ex) Shut down after 60min
shutdown /s /t 3600

ex2) Hibernate after 60min
shutdown /h /t 3600

You can check parameters with
shutdown /?

I have not checked, it it is graceful or not.
So better to check if it looks safe.

Or you can tweak this by simply having a notification beforehand (or a separate timer) giving you five minutes or so before it happens so you can safely prepare and save.

Also i would not shut down the computer if a game runs.
Heat and data corruption.
