Steam detects xbox series x/s controller as xbox one controller
Anyone else has had this problem? Not a huge issue, the controller works fine otherwise, it's just that there's no way to assign any global functionality to the share button, what with the xbox one controller not having it. I've checked the xbox/generic gamepad boxes in the settings, plugged the controller in and still no luck.

This has popped up for other users that I've seen on here. I've not got that controller so I can't say for myself, but others have reported that updating Windows helped. Or was it the driver under Windows?

Controller/graphics/windows drivers are all up to date, must be something else.

The issue might not be entirely Steam-related. Just noticed that both Windows and the xbox accessories app recognize this xs controller as an xbox one controller. Gonna look more into it.

As I said - the Windows update often fixes this.

Yeah, if the controller is compatible enough on the USB level, old drivers might just see it as another XBox One controller since they don't know about the new version.

Just tried this controller on a brand new windows 11 machine, same issue. The system just shows it as an xbox one controller. Oh well, it's mainly an esthetic difference anyway.

Have you actually searched the other threads made about this issue, because there were a few when the Series X was launched.

I have this problem at the moment but my Xbox accessories apps does recognize it as the newest series x/s controller, it is just Steam that sees it as an Xbox one controller.

Have you found any way to fix this?

Seeing controllers for latest gen consoles as xbox one controller is expected. MS wanted to ensure backward compatibility with older gen so reallly made all new controllers gen3 xbox one controllers. Windows driver is for xbox one controller. Windows legacy control panel and joy.cpl aka Game Controller Settings test gui will likely show xbox one controller

Steam detecting xbox one controller type is expected behaviour. Though doesnt highlight the extended feature set driver are needed to get working share button for steam screenshot in game when using gen 3 xbox one controllers.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
