Changing analog sticks Dead Zone does not change the ingame behavior at all.
First, the option to configure the controller is kind of broken here. If I go into Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> General Controller Settings, the changes made there are simply not saved.

But after trying two hundred times for some reason Steam manages to save the changes. It turns out that no matter how much dead zone I set, the in-game behavior doesn't change at all and the dead zone of the analog sticks always stays the same.

Does anyone have any ideas to try to change the dead zone in another way?

If I run games elsewhere I can get much smaller dead zones with the same controller, but not on Steam.

Right-click game in Steam Library > Manage > Controller Configuration (I think it's still that - I'm on the beta where its now called Controller Layout)
Select the stick, then choose Additional Settings. Set Enable Deadzone to Calibration.

I know this is an old thread, but thank you for your response. I was clueless as to why the deadzones weren't working in-game.

My controller got a really bad drift recently so I have to rely on deadzones.

Adding to the answer he gave, to apply your dead zone setting to the other games you'll sometimes need to right click on the game title, then properties, then controllers, and finally choose the option that enables "steam input". I do this for all the games I need to use my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controller and now I have no more problems with dead zone (the configuration is global, but for the games to accept it they need to have the steam input option turned on, I think).

That's good to know, thank you. So far, I only tried on one game, which already had Steam Input Enabled (since I was trying to troubleshoot other things).

I'm sorry, maybe I'm an idiot, but how do you actually adjust the dead zone slider? And what does the "translated output value" number and arrow actually mean? Nothing I do changes the slider positions (yes, I've selected it first), except if I click them with my mouse, then they jump MASSIVE steps (0-25, then 25-63) and there's no way to get them to go back. I have to exit out and reset all the settings.

There's also no way I can find to simply use the global deadzone configuration in the OTHER controller configuration UI (the one from Controller in Steam Settings), unless maybe that's the one called "Default"?

Edit: So this new per-game UI seems to be very Steam Deck-centric, and doesn't work correctly in Windows with a mouse, but I managed to click-and-drag and adjust the deadzone sliders.

From my best estimates, "Default" will just apply a fixed 50% or so deadzone, leaving you with extremely unresponsive sticks. Custom has bugs in the UI making it very hard to actually use. Neither option will use the global Steam Input controller deadzone configuration, they'll just ignore it completely with zero warning.

After some trial and error and testing in-game, I finally managed to get a deadzone config that worked.

The mouse control is fixed in the Steam client beta. Looks like you got things sorted but if you wish to join:

Thanks for that! Since they changed the UI and how Big Picture mode looks, I didn't know how to set my darn games to respect the configured deadzone!

Edit; no... I've set 'Seam Input' and I have Phasmophobia that doesn't respect the deadzone...♥♥♥♥ that sucks.

I knows it's an old thread but, is there a way to fix it when doing this not works ?

I've only always used this method for steam input, but no matter what it just never works, I have the dead zone set to max, but nothing ever changes

You're setting the deadzone via the Calibration screen (e,g, Steam > Settings > Controller etc)?

To apply that setting to the game:
- right-click game in Steam Library > Manage > Controller layout > Edit Layout
- choose Joysticks from left side menu
- choose the gear icon for Right or Left Joystick Behaviour
- scroll down to Dead Zones or select it from left side menu
- set Deadzone Type to Default

(Default is the deadzone set via Calibration, Custom would be one you set up for the individual game)

This is already the method I use (I didn't even knew there was another method)
But it just doesn't work, whether I set it to max or to the minimum, the drift on my controller is still the same on every game (even the slightest drift affect the games when I have the deadzone set to max)

For some reason steam input just refuses to works, I've tried using all 3 mode "steam input" , "default", "no steam input" to launch the games too, but nothing changes
It's very weird because the calibration screen clearly show the deadzone covering my drift when set to max

You'd want Steam Input enabled or enable Configuration Support/Steam Input for your controller type. Change some buttons around on the config and see if that is applying, so we get some indication if Steam Input is doing its stuff in-game.

Also what happens if you set the deadzone via the games config? (Set Deadzone type to Custom)

Are you able to open the Steam Overlay in-game?

I tested and I can indeed change the buttons on my cotroller in-game via steam input
It seems like only the deadzone refuses to works, it's very annoying considering it's to play fighting games
I can also open the steam overlay in-game
