In this case "Steam". Its not allowed to have "Steam" in your group or user name because of security reasons and scam protection.
Valv[e] hid your games & activity
It's not in the nature of things for computer systems to have meaningful, accurate error messages.
Ogami, I hate to be pedantic but, to use a technical term, it's a reserved word rather than a forbidden one. All group and user names containing those words are reserved by Valve for their own future possible use - so technically they are all in use even though they don't exist an the message does make some bizarre kind of sense. That's the way system designers and programmers minds work(?) you see.
Actually, that's partly untrue... I love being pedantic.
Well its "reserved" because they dont want users to take them, so its a "forbidden" word.
:P
But in the end it does not really matter, only the fact that you cant use those words on Steam for user names or groups.
"Silly rabbit, you can't use the word Steam in your group name. What were you thinking? Come on now. Choose from the other millions of words in existence. Have a great day!!!"
It can be hard not to be pedantic considering the stuff that gets posted here, but you should try not to be because a lot of the replies to people's suggestions look like trolling. I think the phrases if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything and bite your tongue should come to mind before posting replies. Not saying I'm perfect at this myself but I try.
Excuse me? Your original post is basically a bad-tempered complaint about the exact wording of an error message - it's the very essence of pedantry. Ogami has almost certainly seen enough of my posts to have some understanding of my sense of humour - particularly the humour I find in the absurdities of the world of IT.
You? I'd suggest that you go crack open a beer and lighten up a bit as that's exactly what I plan on doing.
Nah, you should see my 'suggestion' about steam group search, THAT one is bad tempered. This one is positively mild in comparison. I'm just saying don't be winding people up, too much of that going on here. I'm not going to 'chill out' about trolling, ever, beer drunken or otherwise.
You're the only person that's gotten wound up here. You're also the only person here with an axe to grind about Steam's functions and error messages. That's no coincidence - you're strike me as being permanently wound up and that ain't healthy.
You're a smart person, you can find workarounds for all this stuff and manage to ignore the usual nonsense messages that you get out of computer programs, right? I know you shouldn't have to but that's the nature of things.
Oh, and none of this is trolling by the way - trolls don't use intelligent arguments in their posts.
So..... 90% of Steam users on the forum are trolls?
You're assuming I'm wound up, I'm not. And you're doing a lot me talking here than me! I didn't say any of this was trolling. 'trolls don't use intelligent arguments' - so what do intelligent trolls do then?!
No, they're users. Unfortunately, there tend to very valid reasons why some Tech Support staff consider the word 'user' to be synonymous with the word '♥♥♥♥♥'.
I don't know you so all I can do is go off first impressions, and the first impression you tend to make is that you're immensely irritated. Ironically, one thing that could help prevent that misconception about you is... if you'd be more pedantic about your choice of words and your phrasing. To be honest, post #7 did come across as being little more than a foul-tempered snipe.
Intelligent trolls? Where? I always feel that particular term is an oxymoron, whereas the trolls themselves are just plain ordinary morons.
