Looking for a little help connecting a PS4 controller..
My PC does not have bluetooth so I am trying to use my PS4 controller on Steam, with a USB cable to Play Red Dead Redemption 2.

I really have no clue why it will not work. I tried Forced on. It says No controllers detected??

Someone please help me with this. :( I swear it is NEVER easy for me. Not once.
Sorry also.. I know this must have been asked so many times here.

Have you tried DS4Windows?

ok

Sony controllers yuo need to remember, are NOT supported. They're proprietary hardware. The only way they work on here is by software that emulate Xbox controls.

So try DS4Windows or any of the other utiltities I can never remeber the names of.

But be warned. It may well work then all of a sudden stop working or some buttons don't work properly. That tends to happen.

If this becomes a problem your best bet is to get a XBox One controller as they are as close to problem free as you'll get.

PS4/5 controllers are supported by Steam. For games that don't have PS support but support Xinput/Xbox 360 controllers, Steam (with PS config support/Steam Input enabled) will do the emulation job. Steam Input and DS4Windows do the same thing in this regard.

@Gazbaye
Assuming you're on Windows:
Are you using DS4Windows or other input mapper? Steam doesn't try to interact with PS controllers if it sees "DS4Windows" process running.
If no input mapper, check if the OS is detecting the device (if you can play other PC games with it then no need for this): press Windows key, type joy.cpl, press Enter. The controller should be listed there (Wireless Controller). If it's not showing up there, check if you're using a working data cable/check USB ports.

No they are not SUPPORTED.

The word has a very specific meaning. It means they are OFFICIALY recognised and serviced by them. This is simply not ttrue.

What this means is that if you have a problem of any kinf, Valve have ZERO obligation to fix it or atend to it.

That's what Supported by means.

Ok.. Thank you all for your replies. Got some good information there. I will try the DS4Windows. Hope it is easy going.. I just want to play Red Dead haha. :D

My horse keeps running up a mountain or off a damn ledge while I use Mouse/Keyboard. I press D and it goes bloody left! Maybe some of you have some pointers on the M/K settings?

If you're getting wayward controls like that, first culprits are usally you have mouse sensitivitytoo high . Turn off anything like mouse smoothing if it's still there.

"Supported" here pretty much means "works with"/"is made to work with".
Say there is a racing game and the Devs say "wheels and pedals are supported", that means the game works with wheels and pedals.
Or a dev saying "we now added VR support", means the game now works with VR devices.
Or "this game supports gamepads", means it works with gamepads.
It's the same as that with Steam and PlayStation controllers (+Xbox and Nintendo Switch controllers, 1st party and some 3rd party if they operate differently, and others as the Steam Input team at Valve do their stuff). Valve make it so Steam works with those devices, is able to make use of rumble/gyro & other features. In other words Valve make it so Steam supports those devices.
If still in disagreement check Valve's patch notes and you'll come across things like "added support for this or that controller".

Yup added SUPPORT. Which means THEY support it.

Well done for proving my point. That means exactly what I said that they will fixc it if broke.

Well done.

Also don't conflate the two usages of the word either.

We are talking about Valve or MS' support of the Sony proprietary tech. They do NOT support this.

You need to be specific to that same analogy. Not by showing a we support this meaning "you can just use it".

As the sony tech is PROPRIETARY it really turns things into the former term.

I just want to plug and play lol.. After reading your posts I am still confused by it.

I read on Steam and on one or two other sites that I can and should be able to use it. I read others have no problems, just plugged it in via USB and away they go. I bought an official PS4 USB cable just in case the one I was using was not. No joy.

All I am seeing is that, yes we support it. No we will do nothing if it does not work.

Thank you both, and thank you all again for putting in the effort to reply to this situation.

Then I should explain a bit better as I got sidetracked about semantics.

It's basically this. You CAN use it, as it SHOULD work.

The point is though that the drivers used are cobbled together from the Xbox drivers, so while it works it ain't OFFICIAL nor supported (supported purely means "we formally will update and help if there's problems").

And what we've seen on these forums is that Xbox ONe controllers work the best and with least problems, unsurprisingly because that's what Windows 10 is deisgned for.

BUt the PS controllers typically work OK, then all of a sudden either stop working, or buttons go weird or something else. Again, because they're not SUPPORTED it can make you tear your hair out as we've not come across any real way to effectively fix the issue.

All I know is that there are other utilities out there to try but it's by no means guaranteed to work (and again for how long) - I can never rememebr the names of these other utilties, but DS4Windows is one, and there's at least two or three others I've seen before.

That's why I recommend the best bet for "plug and play" is to simply get an official Xbox One controller. I use loads of platforms (I have over 70 workng consoles and computers) so I swap between various controllers but if I want just no hassle, it's the Xbox One conrtoller every time.
