Did Steam knock one of my friends off my friend list?
I don't know what happened but my friend said he is on my friend list, even saw my status, but was perplexed how I could friend him again. Is Steam now having issues keeping track of who people are friends with? Is the sale somehow having a much larger effect than anticipated for the servers? Can someone please explain what happened? My friend is confused as well.

The only way for a person to no longer be friends with you is either you unfriended them or they unfriended you.

Yup, my new friend is correct.

Either they removed themselves or you did.

Steam can have issues during the sales where functions don't load, like inventory, store page, etc, and stuff looks to be missing, but if their status is such that they are not friends then either one of you has removed it.

If you can't locate your friend then try here https://steamid.uk/profile/76561198046202263 which will show your historic friends. You will need to make your friends list public or sign in via the API to gather such information.

There is also a possibility that their account is hijacked whereby the scammers removed all friends. As said, Steam don't remove friends from users accounts.
I guess he did an oopsie like crunchyfrog said, or I did. Oh well.

If Steam started removing my friends I would probably stop using it

It's easily done.

I often keep switching the bloody music player on at ramdom moments. Never understood if it's my arm still playing up or just my keyboard.
