Very High power usage while gaming!?
I never noticed this before, until after I installed the new gpu. Task Manager shows Power Usage = Very High with every game I run! Is this normal for a 3080 Ti?

Even after undervolting it, the coil whine has lessen, but the power consumption is still High!

I spent alot of money on this, and don't want it to start burning out/dying in a few weeks!! 😟

Undervolting should only really be done in very specific instances where you want to reduce power for a specific need. These are really only relevant if someone is trying for a 'silent' PC which raises the performance threshold where the fans will spin, or if the PC is a small form factor where cooling and airflow may be problematic and thus reducing thermals may be necessary.

That defeats the whole purpose of owning a high-end gpu, does it not? I'm already limiting myself by undervolting as is.
If you are resorting to undervolting or possible capping frame rates, then why spend the money for 3080TI? It's like disabling half the cylinders of a Ferrari engine because it's too powerful for you to drive.

That was funny. 😂

I wanted it so I could run my current, and future games on (custom) High Settings, with High Frame Rates. But I didn't expect it to ramp-up with noise & power consumption!!

My GTX 960 SC has lasted me for many years, and never failed. But unfortunately it's starting to struggle with modern day videogames, so it was time... 😌

What did you expect? Your 3080 to use less power than a 960?

Power = heat, heat = noise. Nothing in this scenario is out of the ordinary.

You can try undervolting, which may reduce heat, but that’s at the cost of stability.

I came across gpu undervolting tutorials while searching for a fix for, (what I now know is called) coil whine. 1st time ever experiencing that.

For the money a 3080ti costs more than a 3060, it better does a lot more things.
More things, more circuits, more energy, ...... it better is louder, so to say.

The question is, if you needed all that.

I had what was considered the "best" 5700 XT for about a year, but sold it, because it gave me nothing but problems! But 1 thing it never did was, trigger High Power Usage, and the noise level always remained tolerable, and quiet at times.

I guess I kind-of expect something similar with this gpu. ¯\_(-_-)_/¯

I have a 3070Ti which even under load, runs quiet. ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3070 Ti OC to be precise.
Cards can be powerful and quiet, if the circumstances allow it, like proper airflow and a good cooling system.
By the way, my system does not use any watercooling, purely air.

Yeah, I wanted something with Power, Ray Tracing, VRAM, and Longevity. A card that would still be relevant for gaming & editing 5+ years from now.

From my experiance, coil whine tends to be from the power supply, not the GPU. It may happen when using the GPU and gaming, but that is just because the GPU is drawing that much power.

What PSU do you have? You went from a 960 to a 3080 and that is a fairly big jump in power usage.

A fair amount of reviews state coil whine as an issue.

Coil whine doesn't mean something is wrong though, it can just be bothersome to some people. I tend to use headphones, so when I had a PSU that whines, I never really noticed it when gaming.

The whine only tends to happen when gaming and the system is under load.

For me, it happened most when I used modular PSUs and only one time when using a non-modular PSU.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the manufacturer ver. as well. The 5700 XT I had was beefy (MSI Gaming X), and it stayed cooled and fairly quiet while gaming.

This time around, I wanted a reference/Founders Edition card. It's smaller and looks better than all the 3rd-party versions to me. :^)

Thanks for the info., I'll look more into this...

That sounds like a loud card

Yeah, it's definitely coming from the PSU. I couldn't tell at 1st, until now. And so many youtube videos blame the gpu, but it can be both sometimes.
