Disk Write Error
I'm having a problem where a game is due and update, a few MB will be downloaded and then it stops with Disk Write Error. I resume the download and its the exact same thing; a few MB download and then it gives up.

After googling the problem, I've tried everything!

Restarting Steam
restarting the PC
freeing up space on the SSD
verifying game integrity
Launching Steam as an Admin
Allowing Steam full control on Windows
adding and/ or removing ReadOnly privileges
Clearing the download Cache
running Diagnostic scans on the SSD (provided by Samsung Magician)
uninstalling the specific game (Which lead to the game not even downloading at all now, because of the same issue)

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with my SSD, I download games from other game stores all the time with no problems.

This is literally driving me insane and I have no idea what else to try

remove Steam\steamapps\downloading.
maybe something is corrupt in there.

disk write errors can be caused by a number of things.

What is your setup? Which windows version, is it an internal SSD? Is Steam installed on the same SSD or is it elsewhere?
What does Steam say about the error in detail: (steam\logs\content_log.txt)?

If your SSD is fine(assuming it's fine) then it can be your firewall. This can be a potential issue regarding proper folder access permissions.
1. Try to turn off your firewall/antivirus/"smart"-screen whatever software and then try to reinstall.
2. Create another directory/partition and try to download your game there.
If "nothing" works at all, then there's only one way left.
3. If it's there still then you would want to reset your PC and shut Windows Update up.

Windows updates create unwanted problems and mess up everything, it is better to update it once in a while.

my setup is Windows 10 (up todate) with two internal Samsung QVO 1tb SATA SSD's. Steam games are downloaded onto the second SSD, the first is only used to documents and Windows files. And this is the only instance of Steam installed on the entire PC, theres no other Steam Folders anywhere

as for what Steam says about it... well.... it makes no sense to me XD, but maybe you'll be able to find something
(Ill have to send this is chunks 'cause Steam has a word limit on forums...)

Also, I know Steam specifies Gang Beasts as the game in this log, but Im having the same issue with all my Games
Eko Feb 20, 2022 @ 7:36am
Update:
I dont know why but installing games onto my other SSD (the one for Windows files and Documents) is working and the game is installing, I can then finish the installation and then move it to the correct folder. obviously, this is only a temporary fix, I'd prefer the game to install straight in the proper location

"Failed to write chunk in file"
That means it attempts to merge two pieces of information, and this action failed. (its like editting a word document basically, changing something, then saving it. this failed)
.. that is very odd basically (especially as the steam client is the one that makes those files)

How long did you have this problem, is it recent?
Is your computer new, did it start after an update on Steam or... idk. (I'm looking for a cause basically)

If it is since a Steam update, I'd recommend making a bug report: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/

uhh... this bug is weird at least.
Let's see. Did you check the S.M.A.R.T. Status of your SSD? (make sure things are okay)
Did you run 'windows defragmentation' to "optimizise" the ssd before trying to download?

Edit: Smart can be checked in Windows.
open up CMD (windowskey+r) (cmd.exe)
there type:
wmic diskdrive get status
its extremely minimalistic, but if everything says OK you have nothing to worry about.
you can also type:
wmic /namespace:\\root\wmi path MSStorageDriver_FailurePredictStatus
predict failure should be false.

Defragmentation can be found in My PC, right clicking a disk, selecting properties, tools, and then hitting 'Optimize'. If it is an SSD, this program will basically trim instead of actually defragging)

This problem literally just started today, I dont think there was Steam Update recently. Me and one of my friends were just about to play Gang Beasts, but when I came to download the games update, it got stuck in this Disk Write Error loop
my PC isn't exactly brand new, but I wouldn't say its Old either. its a custom build that I've had since like, 2015 or so. I occasionally upgrade parts and stuff, but I haven't made any hardware changes lately.
if you're wanted specs; GTX 1660 graphics card, 16gb DDR4 RAM. Ryzen 5 2600 processor and two 1tb Samsung QVO SSDs.
But I've had this set up for a while with no issues at all. I can install games from the Epic Game Store and Riot Games and The RockStar Launcher perfectly fine. From what I can gather, the problem is with Steam (or at least, my installation of steam), because every test I run on my PC says its perfectly healthy

I did the SMART scan, there was an option within Samsung Magician, everything came back ok from that. I also did both the Command Prompt lines, both came back ok and false, just as you predicted.
Eko Feb 20, 2022 @ 11:06am
Another update:
I've had Cyberpunk 2077 in my Downloads page for a while and I've been using it to test the status of this Disk Write Error issue... for some reason, its just restarted the install and theres no problems so far.

I swear, I usually know quite a lot about computer problems, but this had be completely stumped, the fact that It wouldn't work all day and now all of a sudden its working fine really baffles me.
Thanks for the help so far. But for now, it seems to have fixed it's self
Elucidator Feb 20, 2022 @ 2:19pm
Its possible something got corrupted in one of the vdf files. Letting Steam somehow 'recreate' these files from scratch could fix the issue, but its hard to guess which and how. Some of them are part of the userdata stuff, which means...
a whole client reinstall would be required to truly let steam recreate these things-
but luckily it somehow 'fixed itself', which is odd in itself, so..
... idk. If you encounter this issue again, I recommend removing Steam and reinstalling it.
Unfortunately some vdf files are generated and updated when you download and install games in a library, so it may involve a lot of reinstalling if it is really messy.
Sadie The Sadist Feb 20, 2022 @ 2:55pm
I'm having the exact same issue, and have been having it for a while. But it's only with some games. Like OP, I've tried every disk write error fix I can find, but nothing so far has worked. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall Windows 10, because... Oof.

It's particularly weird because it is very game-specific. Like, Gang Beasts, for instance, will download fine every time. Then you take a game like Cyberpunk 2077, and the three times I've downloaded it throughout the time it's been released, it gives me this issue every single time.

It's to the point that I really wish I could uninstall Steam and never touch it again, because it's the only launcher that gives me any issues at all.
Elucidator Feb 20, 2022 @ 3:02pm
You may want to make a bug report as well: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/
(read the sticky for a guide)

You can try to see if this is a Windows 10 issue, at least, if you haven't tried that.
Yes, I get what you are going to say: "Its only steam, so its a steam issue"
but like... if it is just on Windows 10 that this happens...
no, don't upgrade to windows 11

What I mean is, try making a bootable linux live usb and see if you have the problem on the linux version of Steam.
(this way we can rule out networking basically)
Sadie The Sadist Feb 20, 2022 @ 3:07pm
I know it's not necessarily *just* a steam issue, computer programs are interconnected software, the way various parts of the architecture communicate can be very complex. But the only symptom is Steam, and that is frustrating.

Unfortunately, I'm barely computer literate, and LINUX is beyond my skillset. I also don't have a thumbdrive handy at the moment, though I'll keep your suggestion (and google) in mind the next time I can grab one to try this.

For now- my autistic brain really just wants a work around, even if it's a flimsy one, because I'm sort of obsessing over Cyberpunk and I just want my fix. XD

Thank you, though.
Sadie The Sadist Feb 20, 2022 @ 3:10pm
I dunno if this is relevant, by the way, but it's the first time I've seen Steam do this. Every time I restart the application or the PC, the cyberpunk update is removed from the list on the downloads page. I have to go to the game page and hit the play/update button for it to pop back up and resume.

You'd be surprised at how simple they made linux nowadays.

There are a few good videos by ExplainingComputer, for example the one on ZorinOS that shows you just how easy it is to install it. (edit: I'll add it below)

People think too hard about it, but what I mean is, its a skill you acquire quite quickly by trying.
Windows is harder to install (and use as of late).
