Try a different resolution that is compatible with your monitor.
Black screen could also indicate gpu drivers require updating.
If you have nvidia use nvidia sight.

Thankyou. I did try changing the resolution, no results. The game works with directx 10 but it seems to overheat and shutdown, It was working fine with directx 9 but for some reason has stopped. I'm on a laptop with a Radeon graphics card. Please forgive my ignorance. Any other help is appreciated :)

Check temps with HW Monitor.

I'm guessing the overheating is unavoidable if I'm using more processing power? I was quite happy using directx 9, it's just not working now :(

What game is it please.
And your OS system is?
Most newer gpu automatically support games with a different directx version.
Edit
did you update the drivers maybe roll back.
Over heating could be age of your system. How do you determine if its using dx9 or dx10?
Open your run type in dxdiag press enter

Game is Civilization V
OS is Windows 10 64bit
I didn't update the drivers manually but i think there was a Radeon update installed.
It's not an old laptop.. 6 months.
Option at launch enables me to choose directx9 , 10/11, or touch option. directx 9 is the one i was previously using without issue. Now its the only one that won't display properly?

I just checked the dxdiag. It says version DirectX 12? What does that mean? :)

Try selecting DirectX 11. DX12 is basically just graphics software.

So if i check the temperature then what? I'd like to play the game on the higher setting because it is better visually, but i've been limited by the overheating.

Just check the temps with HWMonitor, we don't know if it's overheating or not.

I'm quite certain it is. It becomes very hot to touch then shuts down. I think windows may have even notified me last time that it shut down due to overheating. I'm not really a pc gamer so i trust you know more than i do about this, but what else could it be?

You can't tell by touching it.

I'll check it a little later. I've got to play the game for about 30-60mins before it usually shuts down. How are you thinking this will help resolve my issue? :)

It may help us to know what stop errors your system events has listed.
Search event viewer
then open the tab below windows logs application. If you see any with a red circle and a white comma , right click it and open event properties> use the copy and paste here
There is general event and details event section.
You could also check the Hardware event logs maybe something in there, expand Application and Service Logs.

If it is just a heat issue windows will not say mate your PC is overheating it will only show stop errors.
Then the hardware monitor should help.
I used to use HWMonitor but I also use this one as well as its built off
CPU thermometer from .org so its an open source tool
from here
http://www.cputhermometer.com/
or here this one has screenshots
https://cpu-thermometer.en.lo4d.com/windows
It uses a small footprint and just keep it running while playing pause game alt tab down and check the temperatures
post back your findings..
