yeah thanks man been reading up on it alot and see its a pretty common scam, luckily i already had multiple levels of 2FA beforehand but you can never be too safe on the internet, done a full system virus scan, blocked the scammer and reported, deleted all current connected devices apart from my own from steamguard and changed password on both account and email.

You can use certain purchase history to verify an account if it was stolen I believe?

Scammers will use whatever tactic to probe info from you, using scared, threating, or friendly tactics.

"Like you been banned."
"I'm gonna ban you."
"Please vote for my team."

Whatever story will be to get you to reply, and provide them your private info to them, history payment, login detail, name, address, and etc... Just to try use against you to hijack your account.

Once they gain your account they take whatever on it from you, items, money, info, and repeat scam with your friends, and family.

Some services allow account recovery by providing purchase history, like Epic games does, while Steam ask for proof like the last 4 digital of your credit card, or etc...

Can check this long post, I put couple example videos showing type of scams that happens on Steam, and hopefully this can help you more for internet safety. Rule of thumb never share your private info as no one should be asking for it in the first place.

They can't - depending on the context of their intentions, they usually ask for purchase history to make the situation sound dramatic or them appear professional if they are impersonating Steam staff. They can't really do anything other than that and maybe pass it on to another scammer or use later down the line to question you about 'illegal purchases'.

Another possibility is they are just testing to see what information and how willing you are to hand it over - if you happily pass over your purchases then they may ask for account name and a guard code depending if they've partly phished a credential like your password.

I've seen some users get into a right muddle and in deep but it looks like you bailed at the right time.

They ask for the purchase history, because it shows account name.
Next step they will ask for a code "for verification of whatever" "they send to your phone", which is actually the code they need in the process of gaining access to an account they just know the login name of.

thank you all for your help and will definitely keep it in mind, may the time come where another lowlife scammer tries to scam anyone.

If Valve wanted to see your real purchase history, they would not have to ask you for it. Besides, it's a history of your purchases from Steam anyway, so they already know what you have purchased from them.
