A user on discord attempted to impersonate a steam staff member and steal this steam account.
I managed to get help on the last second on the steam discord. I changed my password. I also have steam guard on my phone and changed my password. Am I safe? He managed to get my purchase history and email. But I managed to re login my account and still have it rn. I am also posting it from it right now.

I would appreciate some help! Thank you!
Anyone else that got that type of message. Please block the account and report it.

Valve does not use Discord to coordinate account issues. If a Discord user is attempting to scam you on Discord, you need to report that user to Discord.

As far as your account security, be wary of any emails that you receive regarding account issues asking you to click on links or send email responses with account information. Make sure that you are not communicating with anyone via email. If Steam Support wants to communicate with you, it will be via the ticket system.

I've just posted a thread very similar to this. This situation is happening a LOT lately, is there no way it can be stopped?

I believe my account is safe. I am not sure. But I still go it. I changed passwords and everything. I am hoping!

Okay, so make sure you password is one that is totally random and not easy to brute force.

Secondly, if you're not already, definitely use SteamGuard as that will add another layer of protection to your account.

I'm glad you got your account back - fingers crossed it doesn't happen again!

I hope no more people fall for this. Personally I don't know how I managed to get my account. These people trying to scam deserve no place in this community or any other.

After I went threw it 5 more friends of mine got the same message. I managed to tell them not to respond and saved their accounts.

How do you stop people from willingly assisting a stranger on the internet?

Scams are built to gain people's confidence and break through trust barriers. People need to stop believing what they are told is true without verifying the information before giving away personal information.

Yep - that's the way it happened with my friend.
One of their friends got hacked, the hacker then used that account to tell my friend they had "accidentally" reported them and they had to speak to a Steam Employee on Discord to make sure they didn't get banned.
Once that happened, my friends account then sent out the same message to about 4 or 5 other random people, so if even one of them falls for it, that's another load of money for the hackers.

It's absolutely insidious, people are taking advantage of others is vile anyway, but during a global pandemic? Even worse.

I know, I'm just frustrated that it's happening so frequently and honestly they're getting more convincing as time passes - I've had scams by text message that seem so legit and I'm like.... wait a second, I need to check this first, but there has been that moment of "yikes, I'd better click this link" and I'm not exactly gullible; they're just getting more clever.

Is there a way to trace the scam and the hacker back to their own profile? Like, who it all originated from?

Well, as we see many of these such posts every day going back years, they ALL share one common denominator - gambling sites, skins sites, basically ANY external sites that deal with Valve's stuff like inventory or cards.

YOu go to them, you log into steam and access their database. YOu do whatever - browse or gamble, and so on. BUt you didn't actually log into anything - you GAVE them your details. Then they let it stew for a couple of weeks ofttimes, before they then take over your account via the method shown.

The beauty of this type of scam is that it catches you unaware - most people swear blind they NEVER went to one of these sites, but that's the beauty of it. YOu probably clicked on a link opr something someone sent you and forgot all about it.

As long as you've followed the guides to remove your API key and s on, you should be fine.

But for the future - NEVER EVER trade or use outside sites for Steam services at all. They are all there to scam.

I've not seen sites mentioned in other posts (admittedly they all blurred together after a while so I may have missed something).

The one my friend was sent was (name redacted) but which sounds much like what you're describing here - trade sites, etc...

If you're not sure then you should do the following steps in order and without fail:-

Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
Deauthorize all devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
Change your password on a secure device
Generate new back up codes. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
Revoke the api key https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

Changing passwords is pointless if someone already has access, I don't know how compromised you are if at all but it's best to be safe than sorry.

Ah now that's a fair point - you WON'T see the sites mentioned on other posts because anyone who mentions them gets them removed (for obvious reasons).

I should have pointed that out.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed. If you can, I would though to be safe. Technically it's against the rules to name and shame anyone or anything. SO it'd be annoying if a mod stepped in and gave you a warning for it.

2 or 3 weeks ago, same pattern as last year. I was lucky that day because I was on my phone (Steam Mobile) and lied about I having a Discord account only to add the x user there that will scam me outta nowhere.

Last year was ♥♥♥♥; before the gift card restrictions take place, I lost both my account and 3 mils of money solely from one hijacked account telling that "I accidentally reported you for x". Shoulda stepped up a notch back then.

Anyway, OP, if you contacted that guy on Discord, DON'T GIVE HIM ANYTHING! Report, block, and move on. If you have given them information about your account, the best thing you do is to do the procedures here:

P.S.: Idk (and I never tried) if Malwarebytes is worth it, an AV like Defender or third party should be enough; if you are uncertain, either use it or reinstall your OS.
