Commenting temporarily blocked.
This has happened a number of times, and I'm wondering what's up. I regularly check the Discussions pages on 12 of my favorite games, to see if I can help anyone. In the past several months, there are times when I have found that I can't make comments on any of the Discussions pages.

This usually (or maybe always) happens shortly after a stranger has added me to their friends list, which is not uncommon, because people are happy that I have helped them. I'll check their profile to see if it's someone I know, or whatever, and think about it for a few days, and then I'll hit the ignore button for the friend request, because I really only want to friend people I have known for a long time. I have no idea if it's just coincidence that the friend thing happens about the same time that my commenting is blocked. The timing can be soon after the request was made, or after I've finally ignored the request. If I happen to be online, and see the request popup and immediately "ignore" the request, this seeming glitch doesn't happen.

I'll be able to see my comments on other threads, but all of the information on my mini-profile will be zeroed out. I'll look around for a while, trying to figure out what is going on (I even sent a ticket to support once when the block was taking a long time to right itself.), and then after some minutes have passed, everything is suddenly fine again. Is this happening to anyone else? What is going on?

I'm at the point where I'm thinking I'll just "ignore" all friend requests immediately as soon as I see them, unless I instantly know who they are. However, I can't do anything about friend requests that I get when I am offline, so I'm a bit perturbed about this issue. If it's not a friend request issue, what else could it be?

Note there's a daily limit of the number of comments/posts you can make so you are probably hitting that limit
HiFive Mar 2, 2021 @ 11:54pm
When did this daily limit go into effect? This issue only started happening this year, and I have always left many comments every day. Also, what is the limit? I don't think I've left THAT many comments on the days this has happened, unless the limit is really low.

Also, the block usually only happens for 2 - 5 minutes, except for that one time.

EDIT: I don't get any messages about the block, either. If it was a true block/ban, I think I would get a message of some sort.

EDIT 2: The person friending me usually has a long history on Steam (or at least a lot of games and game hours) and is from a foreign country - like Russia or China. They seem to speak English, but I don't speak any foreign languages. Also, I keep my profile set to private.

The daily limit has been around for years I believe it’s around 250

Good to know, and I definitely haven't posted 250 comments on any single day. That's a huge amount.

200 posts and comments combined. Non-friends profiles, about 8.

All in a rolling 24 hour period of time.

Are you saying these are your stats for commenting, or mine? I don't think I've commented on anyone's non-friend profiles, ever, unless commenting on Guides counts.

I know my username has gotten fairly popular since I joined Steam. There are hundreds of different profiles on Steam using different spellings, etc., of the same name. Maybe you are looking at the profile of a different HiFive?

All non-limited accounts have the same. So, mine, yours and everyone else's.

Limited accounts have far less.

Popularity has nothing to do with anything.

Oh, I misunderstood your comment. I think you are saying that the limit is 200, and not 250. Yup, still way over what I usually do, which is under 10 most days, and probably under 50 for some high-volume days.

Most of the games I play are older and don't have a lot of traffic on their Discussions pages.

Too many too fast will also hit a spam cooldown. Let's say something like 10 comments on profiles or even in chat in less than a minute.

As I said, I don't comment on people's (non-friends) profiles, and I don't think I've ever been in a chat, unless the private comments I leave for a friend are considered chat. It's really rare for me to ever leave a comment on a friend's profile.

EDIT: The only friends I have on here are Steam friends who also do a lot of helping on the games I play.

Or it's just Steam being Steam for the moment.

Then it's a fairly new glitch in the Steam app, and a scary one for someone who likes to help people get their games up and running and help with questions about the game. If it's a new glitch that is Steam-wide, then I'm wondering why a lot of people aren't complaining about it.

On top of what Hotsauce says, if Steam is playing up (being congested as it is being of late) it can also falsely trigger this "you're posting too often" message. I get it occasionally when there's sale on and such, or my wifi is not playing ball.

I went off on a tangent and didn't actually reply to the original issue that may have been due to maintenance.

My bad.
