What do emoticons do?

Hi! I know this might seem like a ridiculous question, but Im ironically not good w/ computers despite having steam...... emoticons, what are they for? can I use them on the steam community or are they just for chatting during games? I was hoping to use them on my community posts and, if so, how do I find them and then add them to my post?

In community posts, before clicking in "post comment", there's a round face just beside it.You can also type :steambored (open and close with : in order to make the emoticon work.

You can also use them in Steam friends chat. Or, well, pretty much anything within Steam's systems. You can not use them within in-game chats.
