{SOLVED} controller dpad and left stick have swapped controls and now i can only use the dpad for movement in gtao
I use GC201 wireless controller and im currently playing GTA online. The problem is that my Left Analog stick is no longer working for movement in the game and is instead bringing up my phone and stuff whilst the directional pad is now being used for movement. I'm wondering how my left stick and my dpad got swapped and how to unswap them. This is not on steam btw this on Rockstar Game Launcher

My solution was: plugging in my old wired controller and then disconnecting it, then I reconnected my wireless controller and the problem was fixed.

A even better solution(tintingaroo's solution): When in Xinput mode, press Turbo and Start button.

Seen this sort of behaviour with generic controllers, especially controllers that try to clone other regular controllers like the XBox One.

I beleive it's down to something with the input mapper. So you can try disabling the Steam input mapper and installing another one of your choice. I can never remember the names of some of the options out there (xpadder, maybe?) but I'll amend this post if I remember.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Ask in hardeware forum since this has nothing to do with steam

Your gamepad got a Mode switch function. The Logitec F710 I bought for my GF does the same if she presses the wrong button.

Thank you so much! This is a way better solution then what I did but thank you so much. The manual never mentioned this also.

Ah ok - a lite manual. Reminds me a bit of the msi GC20 manual - it gives info about 3 modes but there's a fourth... It's just a single button to switch things there though, so a simpler case.
Anyway, well done on figuring out a solution.

What controller do you have?

Perhaps it's also a multi-mode controller and maybe the manual will have relevant info.

From the manual (direct download link https://genesis-zone.com/product/download-file/93149/User%20manual.pdf) from product page here https://genesis-zone.com/product/p65

LED INDICATIONS
• X-input mode – the second LED glows solid
• D-input analog mode – the first and second LEDs glow solid
• D-input digital mode – the first LED glows solid

SWITCHING BETWEN X-INPUT AND D-INPUT MODES
• To switch between X-Input and D-Input modes, slide the button on the bottom of the controller.
• If in Control Panel gamepad is detected as USB gamepad it means it works in D-Input mode.
• If in Control Panel gamepad is detected as Controller (XBOX 360 for Windows), it means it works in X-Input mode.
• On the console gamepad is automatically detected in D-Input mode, and there is no possibility to change that.
• Vibrations work in X-Input mode.

Get the controller into X-Input mode and see if things are OK.

OK we can come back to X-Input later. It's GTA 5 you're playing?
In your original experience you mention joystick operating as dpad but was the dpad operating as dpad or joystick? It sounds like dpad was acting like dpad but perhaps I'm getting things wrong.

See if you can test the game with both D-Input modes.
With the msi GC20, D-input analog mode means LS = LS and Dpad = Dpad. D-Input digital has them swapped over: LS functions as the dpad, and dpad as LS.
From the vids I've seen, the slider on the back of the P65 only has two positions, meaning the manual doesn't cover how to swap between the D-Input modes... See if pressing the Home button does the swap (saw that on a vid for the PV65). If pressing does nothing, see if holding Home is the answer.

EDIT: Hmm, perhaps my thinking that your controller was in D-Input digital mode as wrong. With the msi GC20, D-input digital mode also means RS operates as the face buttons xD

this was very helpful. sorry to necro but someone will need this.
Start+turbo = dpad to analog switch

This fixed it, but now my left anolog is super inaccurate and still acts like a damn DPAD.

So now it has 8 angles. That's it. Literally happened out of nowhere.

Resetting input devices, then using turbo mode again fixed that.
