YOUR ENTIRE HELP SECTION IS GARBAGE!!! Keeps taking me in circles and the questions that ARE what I want answers to I click on them to be taken BACK to the start of it all with NOTHING BEING POSTED OR CONTACT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is Ridiculous!!! All I want to resolve is WHY does my PC let me sign in and recover my password on the webpage and sign into it to post this. but its telling me I have the WRONG ONE signing into the client to play the games I have paid for...so very frustrating taking 55 min just to get this forum to post in..

the only way to contact steam support is thru the ticket system and only for issues they can assist with.

Do you have a (very) long password?
Does it have exotic characters like say from another language?
You won't get hold of a real person, at least not this way simply because it works differently here.

There are essentially two ways of getting help.

The first, for specific account related or personal data related stuff, is by contacting Valve support via their cupport tickets. You will then have to wait while they get to it. It's pretty quick - at worst a couple of days or so.

The second method is posting here on these forums. These are for ANY other problems that isn't covered by support.

How are you having trouble making a new password? There is a literal button for people that forgot their password.

The OP's password is working in a browser but not in the Steam client.

The Steam site you get to via a browser and the Steam mobile app accept a longer password than the client.

The maximum password length for the Steam client is 64 characters. Steam should tell people this when they are making the password. My guess is that when this limit was set, the developer couldn't imagine that people would ever make passwords longer than that so didn't think that it needed to be stated.

Sorry for the necro, but I couldn't find an up-to-date answer anywhere else.

From my own testing (changing the password from within the Windows desktop client), the maximum length is 64 characters, and doesn't allow any super fancy characters. Generally, if you have a US layout keyboard, any character you can type (aside from alt codes) will work. I have a UK keyboard and it doesn't accept characters like £ and ¬, but it does accept characters like % and @.

Steam Password Bug?
Someone just tried to hack my account. So i decided to change my password .. Crypted and way over 100 characters.

The change has been accepted, but i wasn't able to login via the client. Browser and mobile app worked well with the new password.

Now i choose a very simple and short password. This worked everywhere, also in the client. But why tf steam didn't mention something like this, that you're limited in what characters you're allowed to use and what the maximum lenght is.

If your password is not longer than 64 characters, check that you are using your Steam account login name (not your profile name or email address). Make sure that there are no extra spaces at the end of the account name and no extra spaces at the end of the password.

For me, the problem was just that I had a space after my username causing the login error. If you are sure your password is correct, try putting your cursor right at the end of your username and hold down the DEL key (not backspace) to delete any extra "spaces" that might have accidentally been entered after your user name. Spaces cannot be seen but will cause the log-in failure.

Good news. I am now able to login to steam on the desktop app.

The problem was something to do with the account name not being recognised when I typed it in to the box. I got it to work by writing my account name in a word document and copy/pasting it into the box instead.

No idea why that should work instead, such a dumb bug that Steam needs to get fixed, but I''m just happy that I'm now able to redownload my games.

Not sure why or how this worked, but signing into the client with a different account, logging out, then logging in with the affected account fixed this issue for me (prior to this, I could sign in on other computers and on the browser)

Since this happens with weird frequency - remember OP, you need to use your ACCOUNT name, NOT your profile (not the same thing) or email address.

More often than not, it's the account name that's the issue, not the password.
