Steam is eating up my limited data..
im spending 150$ a month on my 50 gb of data every month, and steam keeps using it all.
i don't want to do updates or conect to the internet. so staahp

its bad enough that i have to pay so much for such little internet, but having a fifth taken away from me makes it much worse. so like. wheres the start in offline mode option? even if steam had to check in every week or so it wouldn't use up much if any data at all. i can't be bothered to nor remember half the time to activate offline mode every time i turn on my computer.

there are options to turn down the download speeds. but i didn't see an option to remove all downloads unless approved by me first.

soo.. is this steam being lousy design? or is there a deeper place to look than the settings? maybe its riight there and i missed it?

i do need help with this one, so hopefully someone is willing enough to read all this, and come up with a solution. one thats not, "get a better internet plan" thats not possible.. the fact that i have internet this far up the mountain for any price is hard to believe. yay rogers, boo telus

You're blaming Valve for your own problems? You can literally just put Steam in offline mode. Problem solved.

Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network. This feature is useful when you have limited or no internet access.

To go offline, click this link and follow the steps.

Or you can launch steam then unplugged internet cord or turn off wifi.

You can still earn achievements and trading cards while offline. They won't pop up though till you plugged internet cord back in or turn wifi back on.

...Or you can find a new Internet Provider Service. I get 1.25 TB for $99/month at 300 Mbs down and 30Mbs up.

Unless you're living in a small village in a dense jungle in Africa somewhere (gross exageration of course but...) how can there not be a number of other choices of ISP's where you live?

There is some areas where isn't alot of isps due to their service won't work in that area. So alot of states or outside of states are limited.

Ouch, that price and data cap is brutal. Here in Germany i pay 40 bucks a month for 250 down, 50 up, no data limit and including a phone flatrate.
My record is like 6TB downloaded in one month.

It really gives you perspective to see some of those prices/limits some users have to deal with.

I always sympathise with people in the US especially with your horrible internet. Not saying we're much better in Britain but at least through having many choices (well over three DSL providers) it means we have at least reasonable pricing.

That said, I'm afraid the problem very much is yours. You see Steam has ALWAYS been an online service. You not having an adequate service to use it, is very much incumbent upon YOU. I get it, you probably didn't realise this, but that doesn't change what it is.

The fact is games are updated because in most cases they NEED to be (if they're online for example). You can't get around that.

But if you want a fix for the short term, unplug your connection after you've set steam to offline mode. Done.

Otherwise, just pause your updates and only download the ones you want.

While we may not have the greatest internet in the world, in most cases at least, if the internet leaves your house through some kind of cable, there are no data caps. It's usually only satellite or mobile (cell phone) that have data limits.

Well, neither do I. And I use fibre for £35 a month.

But I've seen MANY US users on here that don't use services like satellite who, due to only having ONE provider, are stuffed with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ options like data caps. So no, that might be so for your neck of the woods, but there's been quite some historical data on here from users with normal intenet and data caps.

Offline mode, low bandwidth mode, set the data cap, even the OS has something for this.

Its up to you to utilize the options available to you. It's not steams fault if you do not use the options given to you.

sadly i live in a "gross place"

thanks all for what input was usfull.

though, i don't think i was trying to put "fault" unto anyone. even though most reply's were just backing up steam. telling me that its my problem.. i wouldn't have tried reaching out for help if i didn't have a problem. so ya.

and does anyone from steam development even read these? i'm just expecting someone who has had similar issues to give a helpful response. thought i made it clear, well enough. but it's quite normal that someone would want to assume the person not intellegent enough to solve there problem would want to fight about something. that's how most dumb people are. no temperament at all..

anyhow. I was able to find out how to turn off auto updates for games at least. but you have to go into your liberary, and turn off each individual games auto update feature. rather than what a more polished program would be. yaknow. finding such a feature under the downloads bracket.

not that it's wrong to be there. but it's not an immediately assumed place to look, for someone thats not tailored to using steam, and for me. most my "computer" knowlage comes from androidphones. wich are much more, point and click.

but ya.. this already is a much better (rant, topic, info page., whatever.) than what i could find on google. so hopefully this helps the next person wondering a similar problem.

please add on more (USEFULL) information if you have more tips, for the other's that may come accross this page.

i'm satisfied with my results over nothing. though i still wish it were possible for steam to run without haing to update itself. it only take up a bit of my data. so i can just be happy that genshin impact takes little to none to run
