Can you report games/dlc for being broken scams?
Let's just say that there is a broken dlc for an old game (edit: a game over four years old) being sold at 30-60 USD and scamming customers with a botched unplayable expansion
How would we go about reporting that?

who decides it's unplayable? Just because it doesn't work on your system doesn't mean it's broken on everybody's. Your PC may not meet the requirements/some odd hardware conflict that you should contact the developers about.

Note: I did not purchase the item myself, but the reviews say it all

Then you have absolutely no say in the matter.

you raise a great point, but I'm not talking about a specific system issue, I'm talking about a game that isn't playable or enjoyable for anyone, hypothetically speaking
also I doubt the developers would listen to such a degree that I wouldn't bother asking

'Old game' can mean you must run it on Windows XP or something, this is usually clearly stated in system requirements.

Sorry I should have been more specific, it's a game that is over four years old, but not old enough to run on Windows xp

No, because reality does not work like that.

You can ONLY report if it's relelvant and affected YOU. THat's exactly how it should be and I'll explain why.

You see on the internet (commonly among younger people) that the more people who report things gets action taken.

THAT IS A MYTH, because that means that action is directed by numbers and not evidence. It's a TERRIBLE WAY to do things, as it's ripe for abuse.

So, the best way is the way Valve have it here - if YOU are personally affected, you can report (in other words if you owned the game you are able to report it).

Then they can look into the EVIDENCE from your account and details.

That's basic epistemology and critical thinking.

THat said, you WILL find games that don't worjk on certain systems especially newer OSes. That's par for the course with PC gamin. I've sunk hours and hours into Killing Floor. Can't play it at all now as it refuses to work for me in Windows 10.

Every game/dlc/software/soundtrack has a report button on the store page. Use it if you feel you should.

Otherwise, ignore it.

No, because reality does not work like that.

You can ONLY report if it's relevant and affected YOU. That's exactly how it should be and I'll explain why.

gee, I never thought about it that way
you're absolutely right

I guess I should have bought the hypothetical game/dlc so that I can be one of the people affected first hand

is there any way that myself and others may direct attention to a game or dlc so that the conditions of it may be investigated for evidence of scam?

If the people who HAVE actually been "affected" by this "scam" have reported it, that's the recourse.

So no, if you don't own the game, you have zero horse in this race, and zero reason to be involved with it.

Also it would really help if you specifically stated this "hypothetical" game. Because it really just makes it sound like you've got something against a publisher, or are trying to posse up for something that isn't actually a widespread problem.

First off, thank you for being so receptive - that's awesome to see!

Generally speaking, no. Because there's not any need. ONE report will be looked into. Granted it will be investigated and actioned according to the quality of the evidence provided.

So, it IS possible that if just one report came forward, they might get away with it if the evidence presented were lacking. But you're talking about something that has a lot of people complaining. Valve WILL know about that, so there's really no purpose.

And lastly this - consider the fact that what YOU may think is a scam, or anyone else, isn't actually one and Valve have already taken a look and they consider it OK.

I say this because one of the common things we get posted on here are people saying "I was wrongly banned from x forum and I did nothing wrong". The obvious problem is that they make a great claim of innocence, but invariably when a mod looks into it it was entirely justified.

People have a weird way of determining stuff EVEN EN MASSE.

There's a mantra that goes round on Steam and it's VERY usefull because it applies to ALL situations, including ones like this - REPORT, BLOCK, AND MOVE ON.

What this means is if you see someone or a game, or whatever doing questionable things, you just report it if you are able, block them, and forget about it.

Many people (again younger people especially) feel they either need to be public executioner or private investigator. THat's not a good thing because (1) YOu run risk of breaking rules yourself, and (2) It's not going to make a happy time for you.

So that move on part is so very essential.

Hope this helps.

yeah, you're right, someone else would've reported it, thanks for sharing your well constructed and concise response to my hypothetical query

and yeah it does seem like I'm trying to pose up now that I think about it, but that's one of the benefits of having this be a discussion about a "hypothetical" game/dlc

actually, you've been very helpful, thank you for being such a good sport, and providing me with your advice, Zekiran too

I'll block it and move on, because unfortunately, the "hypothetical" game/dlc does not meet any of the reporting criteria (took me a while to find the report button and see the report types myself)

Thank you for your time and consideration

Dude, thank YOU!

That's some excellent behaviour and if you're interested, I think you'd go down well on these boards.
