Steam causing 100% CPU usage on ONE core.
I noticed very poor performance on my computer and when I checked my CPU usage Core #0 was at 100%. I one by one close my applications and when I closed Steam it dropped back down to almost no usage. There was nothing going on at the time, no downloads, nothing. I reinstalled steam, restarted, etc. Problem came back (not the moment I open steam).

For the record I have an older sandy bridge E processor, the 3930k. Anyone else running into similar problems? I just tried updating to the beta steam in case it's the version being the issue.

Thanks!

Try Steam beta, if already in it, opt out instead. You can do this from the Steam settings.

Set your default browser on your OS to chrome, Firefox, or windows edge. By default it's windows internet Explorer on Windows OS. See if this affect your problem, do ensure to restart Steam.

If client files are problem, go to where you install Steam, delete everything except for these two things, "Steamapp" folder, and steam.exe file, once you have everything else deleted, just run steam.exe and should redownload your client, and test things out to see if issue resolved.

To add, ensure there no 3rd party app that hooks into Steam app, that causing the problems. There an anti virus that scans unnecessary causing high usage, and huge delay launching anything via Steam client, so ensure nothing causing problems for Steam.

I completely got rid of my Steam folder in C:, including the cache, when I reinstalled. I used beta and the problem is still going on. It seems to work like a memory leak: The longer I have Steam open core #0 keeps going up slowly over time. It took about an hour or so before the usage was stuck at 100%.

I've tested closing Steam every time (about 6 times now), and I'm sure it's the source of the issue. I don't have any third party programs the interact with steam.

What OS is this, what the build version?

Do you have your OS updated?

What motherboard do you have, and do you have the latest bios for it?

Windows 10 Pro 19041.685
ASUS Rampage IV and yes my bios is up to date.

Have you ever mess core usage? Like prioritize fixed core for app.

Test running Steam under Windows safe mode with network enable, don't run any other app, and see if you get same issue. When under safe mode, no other app should be running at start up so make your job isolating easier.

you sure this is not own faulth ?, what i mean , option and setup and verication on steam startup. this dont get better the more games you have ask anyone here.

i did not say ypu had old pc , should be fast enough and a desktop as i understand it..

but again we cant mind read here. what if its 1 HD that update both OS , and partion the disk and steam doing checkup. ( through in Laptop in top of this, and you do have worst possible setup and in Balance mode or battry mode ) i did not say you had laptop, it was more a worst case sametime. and OS doing backup sametime. then all will feel just like you said in topic

Unfounately, from what I understand this is a chromium embedded framework related thing. It can only access the physical cores, not the additional logical cores. If you have a dual core, then yeah, in all likelihood only core 0 gets used no matter what you do.

If you have a quad core however or more, it can very well be due to the GPU Accelerated Webrendering setting. (yes, I know it shouldn't be related, but unfortunately in my own tests in october this year I found out it was. Disabling this setting at least allowed Steam to use multiple CPU physical cores on my own PC. Ask CEF I guess, or the programmers at Valve who... only do web development as of late.)
Anyway I recommend disabling that setting and tuning to low bandwidth low performance mode and see if that helps any. You can leave directwrite on, unless this too causes problems.

yeah i think we are many that just have a client for start games up , and we automatic have turn off , steam many eating resources, and it dont make it better with multi pc with diffrent spec.

i can only agree with Elucidator, it seem we are at a point with user own faulth for not knowing steam settings can effect such, but even i look that sandy bridge E processor, the 3930k
it should be fine. so something else could be the cause. (steam own settings, maybe ? )

you sure you have newest chipset Driver DL ( as i recall other amd post with wrong info so OS make it even worse, and causes alot of issue , but i have never seen such on intel. but why not do check for BIOS and Update, and please dont say its lack of update.

its almost come to that no one ask about it , we assume it cant be that ofc.

I'm pretty tech savy, and my computer has and would crush running steam. I've had this computer running with Steam on it for 8 years now with no issues what so ever.

I did delay the trouble shooting: After a restart the other day I had forgot to close Steam because of its core #0 problem. I didn't notice any issues for 2.5 days. Tonight the problem came back, and once again the solution was simply to close steam.

I will resuming trouble shooting tomorrow, first thing I'll do is Safe Mode with Networking and leaving it running for a long time.

The system is unchanged, and I hadn't downloaded or installed any new software or programs.
