There is a new update for a game but when I click the "download now" button nothing happens?

There's a few things can cause this issue.

First off, go to steam settings and find downloads, then clear download cache. Restart and try again. This clears any weird download corruption and things should carry on as they were.

If it still persists though it could either something more deep rooted with corruption in steam or some practice you're not understanding (more on that in a bit).
There is a general "fix all" you can always try when steam misbehaves - go to your steam folder and delete EVERYTHING except steam.exe and your steamapps folder (where you games are). Run that steam.exe and it reacquires all the necessary files.

If things still persist after that you may be doing the issue I mentioned.

Steam REALLY doesn't like it if you use more than 90% of your install hard drive. On top of this, when games download on steam they're both encrypted and compressed, so you need to allow up to THREE TIMES the total file size for it to unpack and do its work.

So, for example, if you have a 1TB drive, and you've used 850GB, you're cool - you've used 85% of it and have 50GB left to play with. However, if you then go to download a 50GB game, then you're going to fall foul of this, as you would need to allow up to three times that size - 150GB which takes you right up to the drive's limit.

And guess what typically happens when you encroach on this limit?

YOu get downloads behaving weirdly, like stopping for no reason, downloads not starting (as you experience), them downloading in the wrong place and more.

Yup, on a new SSD with 1.69 TB still available. I'll just try restarting steam I guess...

Which worked for some reason. Anyway topic closed.

Weird, but not entirely surprising give the server issues going on recently.

I read this morning that in the rest of the internet world, Facebook had a MAJOR outage yesterday for several hours which even shut people out of their offices (well done Facebook for integrating EVERYTHING and putting all your eggs in one basket).

It's believed that the cause is the same as has affected some other places recently - no DNS lookup, as one DNS provider has had issues with entries disappearing.

I wonder if it's related here?
