Now the message is 'There was a problem communicating with the Steam servers. Please try again later.'
Typically it's much like the effect of when things get busy (like during the sales) - you'll get things not showing up. It's often the inventory that gets affected where it either won't disaply certain things or anything at all. But you can also get the store not working properly, friends list dropping in and out, and others have been reporting their wishlist not showing up either.
Sadly, all you can do is try again later (give it an hour or so), and bear this in mind for the future.
What I tend to do when these things happen is simple - I leave anything "administrative" until last thing before I go to bed.
