"We are temporarily unable to process transactions with this payment method at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience"
It never gets as far as inputting the card information. Steam support essentially repeated the above message, so at this point I'm just wondering if anybody else is facing the same issue.
Steam told me to buy gift cards in a shop, which there aren't in China. Then they told me that I have to use the payment methods available in my region, which are "none". They also don't know when or if unionpay will be accepted again. That's great customer service right there...
Actually it IS good customer service, you're not seeing the whoel picture.
This does happen from time to time - it has happened with PaySafe in the past.
The problem is that Valve like any business get charged per transaction, no matter which way the payment goes (this is why you can only charge a minimu of $5 on your wallet). Otherwise they'd be out of pocket.
When these situations happen it's either because there's been fraud going on with this payment method or some other issues like rejected payments/chargebacks and so on. So they CANNOT do it. Not only would this mean they lose money for every sale, but the bank likely are the ones making the decision anyway.
Also, sad to say, the CCP are largely to blame for their bad behaviour over shutting out China from the rest of the world more lately. That cannot be anyone else's fault.
Actually, I found gift cards on jd.com
I paid 415 for a 411.5 gift card to redeem on Steam. It's not convenient but it can do until this is fixed, if it ever is.
