How much, exactly, is a "Gem"?
I know a gem is Steam's currency. For trading and that "auction" Steam has, but how much is a gem worth? I've seen rates like 1 gem/ 2 cents and 1 gem/ .4 cents. It seriously ranges, so how does Steam find a single trading card's "gem worth"?

Gems can only be sold in sacks of 1000 I think. You can turn items into gems which add up in time and can go towards creating booster packs but individual ones can't be sold. The auction was a one-off that hasn't been repeated and probably wont return.
Check the price of 1 sack (1000 gems) and then calculate for the amount of gems you desire.

This is the current value for 1000 gems. Simple math will allow you to figure out the value of 100 gems, 10 gems, 1 gem, or any other number of gems.
IK but like, why do some cards have a different $/Gem rate? Why aren't they all the same?

Rarity, demands/supply, condition(foil)

Because not every set has the same number of cards or the same value. All of those calculations are shown here: http://steamtradingcards.wikia.com/wiki/Gems_by_Game

Check market price of the card to give you an idea how much it is worth in gems.

I know what a gem is but how would I know what cards are valuble for gems? Like could you convert Gems to USD or EUR or something.
Just do the maths depending on each card and if you think it's viable. In the summer sale; I turned a few backgrounds totalling 30p into gems which enabled me to create a booster pack for The Witcher 3 in which the three cards were sold for 60p which doubled my money. That was the worst possible outcome and I mainly risked it in the hope of getting a foil in the booster pack but I couldn't lose regardless.

The Unit Rate should be the same tho.

No idea what "unit rate" means but it's not a part of the formula I gave you.

It means that if the demand/supply changes, the market price and gem price should stay at the same ratio. If a card was $1 and .5 gems, and then it's value doubled, it should be at $2 and 1 gem, not $1 and .7 gems. Both variables should change equally (2x in this case).

Market price is dictated by the community. Gem conversion rate fixed from the moment the cards are made eligible.
i just posted 3000 gems for sale and it says they are on HOLD till April 3....is that normal???
