This is correct. Steam does not count hours played in offline mode.
Well it does count them but only for the purpose of refund requests.
The time will not be added to your gametime counter on your profile.
At least that was the way a few years ago. Did not play in offline mode for a long time.

This is not accurate and did not change at least since 2011.

When you play a game in offline mode Steam will still count the hours played but you won't see any changes on your profile. As long as you stay in offline mode steam won't show the "current" number of hours played since the last time you have been online on steam.

When you exit Steam and re-start Steam in online mode = all hours played will change/update on your profile. Now you can see your the complete and actual number of game hours on record.

Yeah, no. Last time i tried was with "South Park - The Stick of Truth".
I played through the whole game in offline mode. My profile shows the game at 17 minutes with the endgame achievements unlocked.
That was 2 years ago. So at least at that time Steam did not update your playtime when going online again.

Strange thing.
I play CoD MW3 since release in 2011 most of the time in offline mode (because of less lags in MW3 muliplayer). Check out my played hrs.
Today I played for 1.5 hrs and checked the displayed hrs just to make sure and yes, Steam counted the "offline mode hrs."
Maybe it depends on the game? Or you do own too many games? ;)
Who knows...

Are you set to appear offline or actually in offline mode? Mine doesn't track hours while offline either.

some games do and some dont. as long as valve has the info in case of a refund it should not really matter.

Valve sees offline hours for refunds.

Yes they do. That's not how logic works.

With a binary choice yes or no, there are only two possibilities. So if BOTH answers are presented SOMEONE is correct, no? It's impossible to be otherwise.

The fact is, that offline does NOT track your playtime and it's easily demonstrable. Try it.

Also, maybe you should look up the rules here especially about necroing old threads. This ain;t a good way to do things.

Except that it does track. Except when it doesn't.

Steam offline mode stores stat changes - playtime, achievements, etc. - in a local cache to be uploaded the next time you go online. This upload is attempted once; if it fails for any reason, all of those stats are lost. That's where the yes/no comes from: both sides are right because both sides happen.

If offline time did not upload, that could be a significant refund exploit. Instead, it's a case of "luck of the draw", as it were. Anyway, I should think this necro'd thread could use to be locked.
I guarantee someone out there's tried playing in offline mode to bypass the 2 hour time limit for refunds.

Boris Johnson, is that you?

Lol, sorry. I wasn't being insulting. I was just laughing at the "it works, except when it doesn't" very reminiscent of that idiot.

Anyway, you're right - there are certain attributes it does track, and while I haven't messed around with it that much in that regard, I have seen it varies from game to game.

So generally I should perhaps amend my point to something like "it doesn't exactly work realiably so don't bank on it".
