DOSBox DOS Emulator has stopped working HELP! (DOSBox Stuff FIXED)
!DOSBox DOS Emulator has stopped working HELP!

First off, I've never been this desperate to where I had to post about a problem. Usually someone else has posted about it and I fix it from the suggestions of you fine people. This time I have to come to the source. Here is the problem...

I'm not really sure when this happened but suddenly anything that used DosBox won't run. I see the whole DosBox logo, the screen goes black, then this error pops up.

I only realized this because I purchased games today from the summer sale and many will not play.

Effected games are:

Blood: one unit whole blood
Gabriel Knight
Hexen: beyond....
Hexen: shadow of....
Hexen: II
Heretic
Wolfenstein
Wolfe stein 3D
Wolfenstein Spear of destiny
Arx Fatalis

Also: Lucas arts games that used to work fine are now playing audio but no picture. The screen remains black.

Games include:
Loom
The dig
Indy and fate of atlantas
Indy and last crusade
Etc.

Using a laptop, i7, 8gb ram, integrated Intel graphics card, running Windows 10.

Please help! I'm very bad with Computers and am at a loss for what to do!

I don't really know where to post this so I've put it a few places. No one has responded yet, I'll update if I get any more info.

Thanks everybody :-)

EDIT: Got almost all DOSBoxgames working now. YAY!!!!

NOT so fast...

What is NOT running STILL:

Black Mirror series
SafeCracker
Desus Ex
and i just found out: Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy

If anyone having trouble with any game ive listed, I can at least tell you what worked for me. Let me know.

Maybe you got some software in the background that causes it to crash? Try shutting down programs like antivirus software.

Also try updating windows and maybe drivers.

Try unplugging any xbox controllers.

Googled a bit, sounds like a laptop? If you can, try plugging in a mouse?

Sorry to ask, but why are you using DOSbox for some of those games ? Some of them are supported in Windows. Did you try compatability mode for the older games and set that to maybe Windows XP SP2 or SP3 instead ?

I bet most if not all in the first list are just included with dosbox, wolfenstein 3D certainly is a DOS game and if you start it with steam it just starts dosbox.
I just tried wolf 3D on my windows 10 and dosbox doesn't crash there however...

Second list should all be Scumm games that run in ScummVM.

I see. Thanks. That is certainly understandable, if they come with dosBOX already to run with them.

Your post is surely more relevant then, as in problematic software or drivers maybe or others you said there.

I do have Kaperski on my PC, but turned it off to try and get this to run. No luck. I've kept it off. Defender is supposed to be off to, but the shield is still in the bottom right hand corner.

I've tried running the compatibility mode troubleshoot on Windows. No luck. I also played around with it myself trying different things. No luck. As far as the DosBox games im completely stumped. I also found more games that don't work.

Harvester
Return to castle Wolfenstein
Safe cracker
Space pilgrim series (no full screen)
The entire space quest collection
Broken sowrd games (no full screen)

Also: messing around I now see that the Lucas arts games (the dig etc) will play perfect in windowed mode. Full screen makes everything black. Same with space pilgrim and the broken sword games.

So it looks like I have at least 2 diffeent problems? That effect two different types of games?

The DosBox one
And the full screen one

Soooo yeah, no idea what to do. All the Lucas arts ones ran fine before. Most of the DosBox games are new. Don't know what happened.

But have you also addressed child processes OF Kaspersky if they exist ?

Such as Kaspersky Secure Connection Service or others ?

Security software can often have their own parent and then child processes also. Disabling or making exceptions in the parent does not necessarily take care of the child processes that can still cause issues with Steam.

Run msconfig from Windows Start and check all processes running and loading on boot also.

Do this, please.....this is in case there is software conflicting with Steam and/or games.......

Take screenshots of all of the programs you have installed on your computer. Control panel then programs/programs and features. (Windows 7,8,8.1) or "apps" (Windows 10 click "Start" (Windows icon on bottom left))

Click Windows Start and type in msconfig and run that resulting process. Go to the services tab and check the box on bottom "Hide all Microsoft services". Take screenshots of all that is left.

Then go to the startup tab on top of that same window(Task Manager in W10). Take screenshots of all that there also.

Post all the links to the above screenshots here, using a file hosting site such as imgur.com

EDIT...Also, these are older games, so did you try compatability mode yet, as I posted about above ?

Yes i did try to change compadibility mode settings. I did the windows troubleshoot as well. If you have a paticular setting or configuration of settings i'm all ears. Ill try anything.

Sry it took me so long to post screen shots, Again not too savvy.

There is that Kaspersky Secure Connection program I was telling you about above. Seen several users here post lately that also have Kaspersky and Steam issues. I highly suggest you look suspiciously at that one, and make sure you have Steam and all games set as real-time scan exceptions in all of Kaspersky. If you do not as of now, you need to.

It is a slideshow, so it is very hard to focus on the images as they are advancing forward too fast for me to look well.

Where are the msconfig shots requested above, please ? See that again, and post those next. You should be able to use the prntscrn key on your keyboard, then paste them into Paint for example, save them, and then upload them to imgur.com if you wish.

If you can only do the slideshow though, then we will try to do our best. Thanks.

EDIT...Ok, you are multiposting here and that last post I missed as I was typing. Please do not multipost. Now what I said here is not as relevant.

Oddly enough "I have no mouth and I must scream" works fine. That has a BIG Scumm logo at boot. Again any suggestions, im all ears because im far out of my depth.

Can you see all the PICS from this link?
I cannot see those, no. I am not going to disable my addblocker either. Sorry.

Just use imgur.com please.
