"Please enter an account name that is at least 3 characters long and uses only a-z, A-Z, 0-9 or _ characters."
I've done this at least 20 times now making a new account, and nothing works. The instructions are the easiest thing to follow. I've followed them. It won't let me follow the instructions. My main account's password is simple as hell and I've tried putting that in but it doesn't work. I've also tried "PasswordISfine_123" and that still won't work. Anyone else ever have this problem?

I can log-into my main account (this account) just fine on the steam client and thru Chrome. Can't make any new accounts though.

Ah in that case, my mistake.

No I don't know what the issue is there then.

In a browser or the steam client?
crunchyfrog May 3, 2020 @ 4:04am
Ah, I've had this a couple of times over the last few weeks and can tell you exactly what the issue is - CONGESTION!

With the coronavirus, and the effects thereof, the congestion has been mad. Loads of features drop in and out - inventories disappearing, auctions not showing up, friends dropping in and out, payments failing and so on.

So, what's happening here is that it just won't log on and it doesn't matter what the hell you put in. I'm betting the reason you're changing your password is because when you tried to enter normally it said your password was incorrect, right?

That's the sign.

Try signing in through a web browser. That usually works. Eventually it clears itawlf, and usually pretty quickly as it's not something that gets affected unless it's REALLY busy (unlike the payment issues and inventories which get affected immediately it's getting busy).

So go make a drink or something, come back and try again (after you've tried logging in through a web browser) and you should be in.

Oh and don't be surprised that any attempt to change your password won't have worked and it'll the password you had before the issue started.

Well, I'm not changing my account password, I'm making an entirely new one, and yes, on the steam client. I'll try using a web browser

EXTREMELY SORRY: Apparently, my account name was the problem, and I was using password rules when making the name.

Lol, don't beat yourself up about it. But thank you for getting back to us, as it does help future readers.

For example, I recently returned to Steam after having no PC for a few years. I'm sat on my bed nect to my consoles galore, with my laptop sat on a table, all connected up to the TV. All fine.

But I'm now getting pissed off with why on earth Youtube is stuck on playing one video. I can't close the page down either. Nothing is responding.

until I realise, I'm using the bloody PS4 controller to try and close Windows......

SO, yeah, we ALL make dumb mistakes.

It's possible the Name is too long, the Password & Name
is the same, or the the Name is not allowed to be used,
or someone already is using it? Have you tried any other
Names for both Password & User Name? The word
Password is not allowed as a form of Password...

Yeah lol, and speaking of helping future readers, the difference between passwords and accounts is the keyword is "or".

While Passwords require all 4 of those kinds of characters, Steam Account names can only have 1 out of 4 of those. Examples, "soberhans" or "SOBERHANS". Not sure about other symbols, but I'm assuming nobody's making entirely numbered usernames. It most likely falls under the same rules.
