games not using full 16 gigs of ram
very recently, i think from the last windows update, my games aren't using the full ram my computer has. i've tried a few solutions from online (outdated though) and none of them seem to work. the system info is telling me that 14.2 gb are usable of the 16 gbs. which isn't a big problem, but my games are only using 4. which was never a problem until this last week when i had a windows update or nvidia update.
resident evil 3, i never touched any of the graphics settings when i first played it, and it ran beautifully. but now its saying that its in the red with 5.65gb of 3.95 available

If the game does not need the RAM, it won't use it. If your games seem to be using less RAM, that generally is a good thing, unless you are seeing game performance issues.
goatfish May 20, 2020 @ 7:07pm
its using more than it says it has available which is less than should be available. this was never an issue 2 weeks ago, but it is now and i've changed nothing
which games ? if it's an older game then not using more then 4gb of ram is normal as 32 bit game can't use more then that.

Post the complete computer's specs, including the make and model of the computer itself.

The exact model number, please, or if custom built, the exact motherboard.

i don't know how to find all that stuff. it says msi in the bios

and the games are resident evil 3 and red dead redemption 2

Go to "help" in the top of Steam, then system information. Right click in the new window, select all, and copy and paste all that here.

Still would be nice to also have the computer model and model number, as this method I posted here may not always provide that.

its a custom build. i just called my friend to have him look at it since he's more tech saavy than me and he built it. this is what steam gave me. i appreciate any help, this stuff goes over my head a lot of times

I find it interesting that the information only shows that you have a bit over 14 GB of RAM, not 16 GB :

Are all the drivers fully up to date on this computer ? I am not talking about GPU drivers, but all other system drivers.

Is this a prebuilt PC ? This is what I get when I google that model number :

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=MSI+MS-7B24+drivers

Can you go to MSI and find the motherboard and link that here ?

i think this is it. says B360M Bazooka on the motherboard

I would suggest that you make sure all these drivers are fully up to date. You need to check the latest versions against the ones Windows may have installed :

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B360M-BAZOOKA#down-driver

The system information tool should be reporting that you have 16 GB. Are you absolutely sure that you have 16 GB installed in that motherboard ?

And are you sure you have it installed correctly ?

Four sticks of RAM at 4 GB each or 2 X 8 GB sticks in the right DIMM slots ?

i thinks its 4 x 4. i see 4 sticks in there. i'll reinstall the drivers

I can't say what is going on for sure, but each time I have ever asked for the system information as you just gave at my request, the tool reported accurately what it detects in your system.

So the fact it only shows about 14.5 GB is strange to me. I have not seen that before.

Just checked mine and it is correctly displayed, at just over 16 GB. So not sure, but maybe keep that detail in mind as you go along and try to find the issue.

So far, there does not seem to be any hardware issue that should prevent you from getting good performance in the games. So I am not really sure what the problem is, but maybe that is just my misunderstanding of your concern.

The meter in RE3 is estimated VRAM usage. That is the memory on the video card, not the sticks on the motherboard. My experience with RE2 was unless you go over by a large amount it doesn't appear to actually cause any problems. Texture quality is the setting that impacts real VRAM usage the most.

As for your system memory reporting 14, it could be 2+2+2+8=14. That would be very strange but possible. If you're curious about it you can run this in cmd:
wmic MemoryChip get BankLabel, Capacity, PartNumber

The whole point of having lots of RAM is to be able to do more stuff or to use more memory intense programs.

You don't NEED a full 16GB of RAM, gaming you're usually fine with 8GB, But we get 32GB to have that huge head space where we will most likely never use it all and get bottle necked lol
