Download speed slow for no reason.
So I have 25MB/s download and 10MB/s upload internet and I tested it many times and it always came back even better than what my provider promised me (30MB/s download and 12MB/s upload). However, whenever I try updating something on steam, the download speed is SOOOO slow! It used to be up to 4mb/s (which is still pretty slow considering my internet speed) but now it's as low as 500kb/s! I've changed download regions many times, I've restarted my steam, computer, router, everything! Yet it never fixes it! I've got no download restrictions on, I set download speed to unlimited in my steam settings, what is this?!

Yeah, its worth checking anyways. At this point I got nothing to loose heh.
Make sure everything is fully up to date, Windows of course, too.

Then try the safe mode with networking suggestion. Keep using a hard line connection to the modem only.

This right here eliminates many of the most common problems we see.

Then, if you need more help, we continue from there. Step by step, using process of elimination.

Start simple and move to the more complex in a methodical manner. Thanks.

Yeah I am going to do that safe mode restart now and see how it goes, thanks for taking the time to help!

You are welcome. Just make sure it is safe mode "with networking", because by simply using safe mode, you cannot connect to the net whatsoever.

You can post here while you stay in that boot also, and I suggest you do if further help is needed.

I just had a bunch of small updates from asrock (took 10 mins) but that didn't solve so now entering boot mode heh. Though for about a millisecond i got my usual 2.4-2.9 MB/s download speed after that download... (one of them was for the LAN driver the rest were other random stuff)

Yea, driver updates are critical. They need to always be taken care of first in most cases like this.

So boot into safe mode with networking and keep changing regions. Pay close attention to what you see happening with the downloading rate. If it gets better or worse, we need to know exactly what you see happening.

So,

Australia NSW: 0-20KB/s (this is my usual one for where i live)
Australia QLD: 0-15KB/s
Australia SA: 0-3KB/s
Australia Vic: 0-16KB/s
Australia WA: 0-40KB/s (weird considering this is the furthest one away lols)

I will try another country now, see what happens.

Try resetting the modem also, using the tiny reset button only if it has one.

Then, you may want to try this.....(regular boot of Windows may be necessary)

For Windows 8 and 10:
1) Press Windows key + X
2) Choose Command Prompt and make sure to run as administrator
3) Type "netsh winsock reset" (without the quotes).
4) Press Enter, close out of the command prompt and restart your computer.

New Zealand: approx. 2.8 MB/s (what it should be, also New Zealand is closer to me than the other side of australia xD)

Not entirely consistent, has dropped down to zero downloading ARK but robocraft downloaded consistently but ARK is usually a pain as is.

So maybe the game you are currently testing this with has issues in other regions but New Zealand. Maybe try other regions with other games if you wish.

You seem to be making good progress though.

At the moment I am just downloading and monitoring in New Zealand. It seems to be fairly consistent aside from that one dip. I think that dip may be where it tries to establish a connection before downloading. (This is what happened when i switched and dowloaded alan wake, it went to 0 for about 20 - 30 seconds and now its consistent at 2.9MB/s)

The next step probably is making sure you will be ok in a normal boot of Windows. For that, I will suggest the following, if you wish to explore that and I suggest we do......

Take screenshots of all of the programs you have installed on your computer. Control panel then programs/programs and features. (Windows 7,8,8.1) or "apps" (Windows 10 click "Start" (Windows icon on bottom left))

Click Windows Start and type in msconfig and run that resulting process. Go to the services tab and check the box on bottom "Hide all Microsoft services". Take screenshots of all that is left.

Then go to the startup tab on top of that same window(Task Manager in W10). Take screenshots of all that there also.

Post all the links to the above screenshots here, using a file hosting site such as imgur.com

What the good Nightenhelser said is good to note, stomptrooper. An internet speed test may be a good idea if you wish. Also, knowing your exact limit if you are not sure.

I personally only ever get about 1.2 Megabytes per second here. My speed sucks. LOL
tacoshy 16 Thg07, 2017 @ 7:52pm
well basic things about internet you should know. Providers state the bandwidth in contract in Mbps= Megabit per second. Dont mix it up with MB/s which is Megabyte per second and only 1/8 of the first value. Download speed gets measured in MB/s.

2nd the bandwidth in the contract is only the bandwidth the provider has to provide you at your home. not the bandwidth a 3rd party like steam has to garuntee you. Therefor you could have a 100,000 Mbps line and still only download with 10KB/s from steam and your ISP still fullfill his contract.

Yeah, there is a lot of programs on my computer. Hmmm, I guess i can do it in a few screenshots.

On another note, I wonder if maybe it is an Australian server issue. Anyways onto the screenshots.

Yeah, I get 23.7 megabits/s with an average download speed of 2.9MB/s

I monitor my internet speeds regularly since we just changed to NBN (FTTN) it stabilised a couple of weeks ago so speeds are consistent around the clock (unless you are up at like 2am in the morning for w/e reason).
