Steam doesn't open but it does in safe mode
Hi, I don't know if any windows update caused this, but this week im not able to open Steam. Only appears the window that says: "Verifying update",.. and then closes.

Last week it didn't happened and could play with no issues.

But the strange thing is if I run Windows in safe mode, Steam Client opens with no problems.

Anyone knows what can be happening?

I have nvidia drives updated, java updated, windows updated. WIndows 10. Disabled anti virus, anti spyware, everything. I don't know what else to do.

Surely you mean it opens in safe mode "with networking" right ?

This means you have a software conflict in a normal boot of Windows, surely.

Do this.........

Take screenshots of all of the programs you have installed on your computer. Control panel then programs/programs and features. (Windows 7,8,8.1) or "apps" (Windows 10 click "Start" (Windows icon on bottom left))

Click Windows Start and type in msconfig and run that resulting process. Go to the services tab and check the box on bottom "Hide all Microsoft services". Take screenshots of all that is left.

Then go to the startup tab on top of that same window(Task Manager in W10). Take screenshots of all that there also.

Post all the links to the above screenshots here, using a file hosting site such as imgur.com

Hi, thanks for the answer. Yeah, I mean safe mode with nerworking.

I'm posting the captures you asked me for. I hope you can help me. As an extra issue, I'm not able to open any game outside steam either, only Fallout 4.

Any program or process of Avast. Usually, having real-time scan exceptions for Steam and games in Avast is fine, but child processes OF Avast still may be a question mark. An example being that/those AVlaunchcomponent processes there.

EDIT....

Avast is on this list, however....

You seem to have posted the same shots twice. And you don't seem to have posted everything I asked for above, please.

Read my post above again very carefully. Submit the rest of the screenshots, please. That is only the 'startup' items.

I just edited the post. Please confirm.

See those two Avast processes in the msconfig shots ? Uncheck those for now, and then "apply" and "ok". Restart the computer. Verify the game files for all games affected next after you restart and log back in to Steam.

You have still not provided all the information, please. Installed programs seem to be missing.

Yes it is included. This is the link: http://imageshack.com/a/img924/6908/jo5Gud.jpg

So, How is it posible that i`m been using Avast last years, with no problem, until last week the issue began? I´ve tried to open steam/games with Avast and Antispyware deactivated with no luck.

I did not see that posted image. Sorry if I missed it. I cannot say Avast is your issue, but this how you troubleshoot using process of elimination.

Programs update and things change. Things are not the same as they were in the last years on your computer.

"But I never had a problem with that antivirus before..."

Now, about the image.........

You realize I cannot read most/some of that. It is Spanish. Why not set Windows to English temporarily so more users may be able to help you here, as English is generally the most-used language in this forum ?

I will do my best, but I cannot read some.

There is one......

uTorrent. Uninstall this and reboot. It is on the list here...

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

So uninstall uTorrent and disable the Avast processes from msconfig as I suggested above. Then reboot the computer. You MUST reboot after doing these.

Then log in to Steam and verify the game files. If the issue persists, then we continue. Again, this is process of elimination. You already confirmed it works in safe mode with networking, so finding the conflict in a normal boot is all you have to do now.

Thanks. Well, i did uninstall uTorrent and Avast. But nothing happened. I only can log in to steam in safe mode.

What can we do next?

PD: "activo" and "detenido" translate to: Active and Stopped. "Habilitado" and "deshabilitado" translate to Activated and deactivated.

This reply does not state that you restarted the computer after disabling/uninstalling programs/processes.

Every time you disable or uninstall a program/process, you have to then reboot the computer into normal Windows (not safe mode with networking) and try to use Steam again.

Andy "manager" and "updater" and "service" third party programs and processes should be suspect to the problem. I will look at your list again, but for now I suggest you carefully disable third-party processes in msconfig, being VERY careful as to what you disable, then reboot again, then try again.

Process of elimination is all this is. Disable/uninstall, reboot, try to launch Steam in normal Windows. Rinse and repeat.

EDIT....

Google Update Core (similar or same program on the list linked above)

What is that pximouse process for ?

Spotify Webhelper. You don't need this when gaming. Disable it, adding to the list of suspects for now.

Yeah,.. im sorry. I didnt mentioned it, But i did reboot computer before trying to log in to Steam again.

I'll be doing what you suggest in the process of elimination and comment you if I have any notice. Thanks!

It's ok, and I did not want to seem rude but wanted to be sure you are doing the restart between disabling/uninstalling.

See my edit above, please. Those others are maybe suspect or can be disabled for now. If you are not sure, but are sure the program is not vital to your Windows, Steam, Computer, or hardware then uninstall it and reboot.

You can do this is batches or one at a time. I will look again at your list. Check this post for edits as you wish and I will include any that I see that maybe could be suspect.

I'm looking to the Services list. Can you see the last ítem is Steam Client and is Stopped!!!? That could be the reason Steam doesn't start in normal mode?

Yes, that should be enabled for sure. However, that would be disabled in a safe boot also, so it is strange unless you only disabled it before taking that screenshot.

Enable that (check the box) and then "apply" and "ok". Restart the computer into normal Windows. Try again.

EDIT......

What is that MegaDownloader 1.7 for ? Is that a download manager ?

Same for jDownloader 0.9 and 2

If so, that is on the list (download managers). I wish I could help better, but your programs list is Spanish and I cannot read some of it.

Yep, they are download managers.

Don't worry about programs names in spanish, all of them are miceosoft softwares that are included with Windows 10.

EDIT...

I deactivated all third party services, restart, no luck.

Disabled Unnecessary process, reboot, no luck...

Enabled ALL services, rebooot, no luck...

This is the only thing Steam does: Updating Steam,... Verifying installation,.. and then closes.

http://imageshack.com/a/img922/5475/9m9MiR.jpg

Still opening in safe mode.

Is it posible that is not a third party process or service but is a Windows one that can be the cause?

Yes, download managers are listed on the support page. I would suggest you uninstall them, reboot, then try again.

Download "Accelerator" and Download Manager Programs

These programs may interfere with installing and/or downloading updates through Steam. Download accelerator programs should be disabled while using Steam.

Additionally, Internet Download Manager has been found to cause crashes when the Steam Storefront is loaded.
