Memory overflow caused by steam client, any idea how to fix it?
Each time I launch the steam client, the process "steam client webhelper" quickly starts to eat up all the free memory spaces in just several seconds - and this quickly triggers a crash of the whole Windows and my computer goes the blue screen.

I just can't imagine why the hell this damn process could be capable to consume 12GB of memory within a minute!!

I've tried reinstalling steam, update the windows itself, and restart. Nothing worked. Nothing! Only deleting the webhelper executable brought me some peace back for a while at yesterday night, but this didn't last long - the catastrophe comes back when I woke up this morning.

Does anyone of you guys know further solutions? Please help!! Thanks in advance!!

I am now using a razer blade 15 advanced, the model with i7 8750H and GTX 1060. My Windows is now version 18363.720, and the version code is 1909.

Follow-up: can also be fixed by disabling WPAD in your OS settings. Example how-to: https://www.howtogeek.com/298460/disable-wpad-in-windows-to-stay-safe-on-public-wi-fi-networks/

Obvious question probably but what is WPAD and what is it supposed to do?

WPAD is the mechanism for automatically detecting web proxy settings. If you're on a home system, you probably don't use it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Proxy_Auto-Discovery_Protocol

But maybe it's enabled if you use a VPN or if your ISP does something weird?

Good to know. I 've never heard of it, and I admit I'm in Britain where our internet is better than the US (and there's hundreds of ISPs), so it may well not be a thing for us to use.

I also asked just to be clear for future readers. Thanks for the extra input.

Yeah, I should have posted it all in my original post. I was just so excited to have found a solution, and I wanted to share as quickly as possible.

I don't think WPAD commonly used any more anywhere, except maybe in countries where ISPs are starved for IP addresses and have to use double-NAT or nonsense like that. It was much more common in the olden days when proxy servers were used on the local network for content acceleration. I think now, the most common use for proxies is on WiFi systems where owners want to control access or show Terms of Service warnings and the like. On those systems, they use transparent proxies anyway, because it would defeat the purpose if you could just slide around the controls by not enabling the proxy service.

However, WPAD is still enabled by default, at least in Windows. Generally, it will just fail after a brief attempt to look up proxy settings, and then you won't notice anymore. Because it's on by default, I set up my network to respond to the request with a message to go direct to the Internet for all destinations so that it would "fail" faster.

In order for Steam to hit this glitch (at least, the glitch affecting me) WPAD has to be enabled on your system AND on your network. It's on by default on most people's computers, but it's probably rare on networks where someone would run Steam. Hence the rarity of this bug.

Ah now you mention it that way, it does ring bells for me in my dim and distant past.

I have 4GBs of memory and yet it runs fine on my pc.

So maybe this IS mostly something at my end, and the only way out for me to get rid of this nightmare is to reinstall Windows and everything else?? Oh no, jeez.......

I had this problem a few years ago and it turned out to be errors with my ram. I found a bootable memory tester and tried each stick by itself, in both sockets. The first stick got the same bad memory location regardless of which socket it was plugged into, the other stick got a different bad location than the first regardless of which socket was used. So I had to buy new ram and the problem with away.

Hi Bullet, I've looked at my system settings and found it already been disabled. Despite this WPAD service already being disabled, my steam client is still having such a memory overflow issue. I guess I have to stay on -no-browser option for another while.

God. Freakin'. DAMN! THAT WAS IT! That's crazy, it's that setting, Steam is as good as gold now! The weird thing is i've got that setting switched on on all my other boxes, so why this one is special I have some thoughts on. This device has LOADS of network adapters installed on it, virtual and physical. I had installed Aruba VIA recently. Perhaps I'll try disabling all those superfluous network adapters next as i'd like to switch that setting back on, but for now that's great work!

Helloooooooo guys!!! Today I finally figured out the solution to my problem with the help of a friend of mine, who was a software engineer!

It's the CACHE of the steam browser!!!

Just clear it by settings -> web browser -> delete web browser cache, and then everything went back to normal for me!!!

Not so sure if this would work for you guys too, but it's worthy for a try. Good luck!!!

(I'm using steam in a non-English language, so the name of the setting might differ from the ones on your computers. Just choose the ones with similar meaning :)
