Dispute payment
Almost a month ago I checked my credit card's transaction history and cross referenced my steam purchase history and noticed I was charged twice so I filed a dispute. I recently won it and my account is restricted from any form of purchasing and when the 4 weeks is up my card is permanently banned unless I reverse the dispute. I contacted my card and they said I can't reverse won disputes.

I am wondering if there's a way I can just send the amount disputed to Steam, I value my account more than keeping my $25. How would I be able to coordinate with my card to send the $25 and steam to know that it's the disputed amount I am sending them?

I have been in contact with Steam support multiple times, it's all the same "Reverse the dispute or you're account is locked".

There is a link to contact support within the account alert itself. They may or may not work with you on paying it off another way.

The fees charged to Valve that are involved with chargebacks can be ~$250. That's why it should be reversed when possible.

Those are the choices if that was the exact wording of the reply.

Ouch, haven't seen one of these situations in a While (but then I have been away).

Anyhow, this is one massive piggy in the middle problem you get if you go about refunding this way, and it's sadly a damned hard lesson.

It's a piggy in the middle, because most people have had this with Paypal on one side and Valve on the other. But it works with any payment provider. You do a chargeback or refund without directly involving Valve and they will freeze your account because they are the ones that end up losing out on money. Many people had it where they would talk to Paypal (or other) and they wouldn't talk about it, saying they needed to talk to Valve, and talking to \Valve got the response you needed to talk to Paypal. And to make matters worse, attempts to try and get them to talk to one another wouldn't work either. Dead frustrating.

Personally, I think there could be far better ways around this, but it is what it is.

As such, your only course of action now is to send a support ticket to Valve and CAREFULLY and CLEARLY lay out the process as it happened. I'm not being insulting here, I;m just emphasising as situations in the past have meant tickets get incorrect answers and go back and forth because the ticket wasn;t clear. So I'm just trying to save you time.

Really emphaises the point that you WANT to pay the amount, but you are unable to reverse a payment that a bank or provider has finalised (which is correct, by the way). It would be wholly unreasonable if they couldn't accommodate that in some way.

But if they don't, come back to us here by all means. We'll try to see what we can do next.

I think the lesson here is you file disputes with the CC company when you can't get a resolution from the merchant. It's your ace in the hole. It's probably shouldn't be your first option every time there's an issue.

The other piece to remember, and maybe it's more obvious with Steam than in the case of some random merchant you shop at once in a while or just once, is the consequences of doing a a charge back for the merchant maybe makes you a customer who's business they can do without.

I mean this information probably would have been helpful last month, but it is the take away now.

Yup, you hit the nail squarely on the head (good run down of the situation there, by the way. Nicely done).

Not only is the frustration of an unfixable situation with piggy in the middle, but you only find this out AFTER you;ve done it.

Anywhere else with any other purchase online, it might not be as bad. But to add insult to injury, your whole account is basically hostage.

Hmm, as this has been happening occasionally for years, I wonder if some sort of sticky or something should be made? I know a lot of people don;t read stickies, but if it helps someone at least, it can't hurt.

Thoughts?

People don't read them anyways.

Oh well, crap. Thanks for correcting me. Bang goes that idea.

You're right, they don't read them, but as i said, even if it helped one person, I'd consider it worthwhile. But if it's already there, it shows I haven't read it either.
Guilty as charged.

Well no one is trying to run you through the wringer, you did what you knew to do and didn't realize there's consequences. So since you're already knee deep into this mess you might as well pick up some understanding about why there's a mess over what you did. Knowing is half the battle and all that jazz...

In general, unless you're an expert on a subject, you could work on your first instinct being to get a handle on the situation as opposed to immediately reacting to it. Except in the most dire emergencies you probably have some time do that.

Exactly as Brockenstein says. I'm in no way berating you or mocking you.

I always try to both answer a post and give good advice for the future. It's just the weirdo I am :)
