You must be a moderator or in the same group to send someone a message while not being their friend.

OP, do note that there is a very good reason for this.

If we were all free to message non-friends, you would be swamped with unsolicited messages from scammers and spammers instantly.

it started with being able to send (and accept) messages from non-friends like Facebook, but exactly this happened.
