Division 2 broke my PC
So I was having a grand time playing the division 2 beta, put a few hours in today and then all of a sudden my PC makes a pop sound, shuts off and smells like burnt electrical.... It won't turn on anymore except for a flick of energy for about 2 seconds, the motherbowrds idle light will stay on for about 5 seconds.

When I first inspected it immediately after it died the GPU was really hot, but the CPU felt normal.

The scent of burnt electronics isn't coming from the PSU instead it's coming from my CPU coolers radiator.

Specs
Asus Maximus viii hero alpha
6700k
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980ti
Corsair Dominator platinum DDR4 16GB
Corsair H110i gtx
Corsair RM1000X

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I've got no PC now and the steam app is pretty bad.(the text goes offscreen so I can't see titles)

Wrong forum? Your on the wrong website.

That being said, stuff breaks, most likely a coincidence it happened while playing division 2.

Time to swap out components, start with another PSU if you have a spare, and see if yoiu can boot with it.

Would it still be the PSU even though the radiator is what smells?

Also is it atleast a good sign that my motherboard lights up for a few seconds? Lol

Unfortunately I have 0 spare parts, it took over a year to even build this PC, so I'll have to (unwillingly) bring it to a PC shop and pay them to look at it. :/

It should happen in games first. Something met its end.

If you know the source, try to find visible clues. Disconnect electricity first.

Man my entire place smells like burning wires it's nauseating.
there is a possibility that if the psu died it's also damaged other components inside the computer , just hoping for you that the cpu or graphic cards did not fried.

That's more likely to happen if someone uses a low-quality PSU with little or no built-in protections. I'll never understand why some people buy expensive components but cheap out on the PSU. The OP had a decent PSU, though, so hopefully his other components are safe.

Yeah the fans, and motherboard still flicker to life for about 2 seconds (motherboard having a 5 second idle light) so I'm hopeful that means they're atleast safe

It's a bizzare situation as I've never seen this before, but I believe all my parts are within the 3 year window so I'm crossing my fingers for "good" news.

Videogames or the engines which are based on can't brake down the hardware.
Perhaps it was a faulty circuitry, overheated because of the heat sink, etc. Even dust in the hardware in some rare cases can damage the components, because it can block the ventilation.

But isn't the system supposed to power down at certain temperatures to avoid damage?

I has this happen to me once. You had a power surge in your area. It seems your local power company in your area was doing maintenance and when completed they turned the power on and it created a power surge so to speak. PC's hate this because when this happens it burns out certain components that are made not to handle this.. You said there was a electrical "smell". Well there ya go. Sorry for the punch in the stomach..... but this is likely what happened.

That smell is horrible. I had a vid card burn up one time while I was out a few hours (wasn't even gaming just from the computer being on) and I came home from work one morning and my router of all things had burned up.

That smell though is awful :/

Shouldn't my surge protector protect against that?

It also seems to still be working fine, along with everything else plugged into it.

Regardless I dropped it off at a repair shop a few hours ago, it ain't free but $45 is worth knowing what failed on me.

See I was wondering if it could happen while it's just in idle to, good to know for the future!

I probably won't be leaving my PC on while I leave the house anymore. Haha

A surge protector only protects against up to a specific amount before it will fail. Anything beyond that can cause damage to a computer.
