Gigabit Download Speeds

Hey,

Does anyone else have gigabit internet and not get full speeds on steam? I have the download center set to the same city I live in and my speed tests are saying i have the full 1 gig. I rarely get above 30-40mb which dont get me wrong, is still fast but i'd like to get the 100-115 I only sometimes get through steam. Is Steam just that bogged down?

Check your modem, router, computer network card, network cables, RAM speeds and HDD/SSD speeds. All need to be able to handle such speeds.

Even then, it is rare you will get full speeds on any site as there are many factors between your system and the system you are connecting to. After all, the connection from point A to point B on the internet goes through many hops along the way.

Yep. I don't have it yet but I will on Friday and I'm on really fast fiber already.

Sometimes it goes as low as 5Mbps... it's just their network and the traffic.

Just to double check make sure your download settings aren't throttling or limiting bandwidth as that's an option in Steam.

I'm not expecting to get 100mbps + from Steam consistently once I do have the full 1gb. Will be nice though as there's usually multiple HD or UHD streams and downloads on various devices that are going at the same time.

There's a map out there somewhere you can use to try to strategize your download location but I've never went to that much trouble. If it's running slow I just go do other stuff...

I have a hardwired Ubiquiti network in my house so its definitely not my equipment. My speed tests show 1 gig as well. My pc is an 8086k @ 5ghz, 32 gigs ram and an Nvme drive so its not my PC either. My data center is Columbus, OH and I live in Columbus, OH so that should be OK as well. I tried setting to a close one like Chicago but it got even worse results. I can sometimes hit 115-120MBps at night but thats pretty rare. Its typically around 50-75. It seems like Steam just can't push that through on a single connection.

Steam compresses and recombines data sent to you. Thus no matter how fast you get the data it spends time having to reconstruct the destination file

What you’ll see is that steam sends you the data as fast as it can

And your CPU and/or disk are throttling the download because it can’t process the data fast enough

Origin games aren't compressed. You need a very fast CPU to maintain high download speeds on Steam because it's unpacking compressed archives as it goes.

i have 1.5 gigabit down and i get like 60-70 MB/s at most, usually just 50-60.

Seems about right.. my cpu and hard drive are not holding anything back gigabit wise.

8086K is nothing special, it gets beat by a handful of Ryzen chips and even the 8700K in 7-Zip decompression.

Steam can push gig

Your system depending on the game and the amount of compression isn’t going to keep up with the download
