PC+TV Gaming: Full Resolution Issue
Hello everyone!

Some games (The Long Dark, Dreamfall Chapters) don't change my TV resolution, for example, I changed resolution in game to 2k, but TV stays on 4k. Photo of the problem: https://photos.app.goo.gl/fUb88jpsyN62fMfb6 (above is the interface of the TV, below is settings in the game)
And other games like The Witcher 3 change it properly (1080p in game - same changes on TV, 4k in game / 4k on TV).

I'd like to know the reason why and how to fix it.

TV is the Samsung NU8000, gpu is gtx1080, connected via hdmi 2.0

If anyone has the same problem and found a fix (please don't advice me to change the desktop screen resolution before running the game), will really appreciate it!

In the Nvidia control panel enable full screen display scaling. This will stretch the image to fit the screen.

Won't solve the problem. My TV doesn't change the resolution, scaling works fine and image fits the screen. I want native resolution of the TV to be changed when I change it in the settings of the game, but the only change is resolution of the game, not TV.

nu8000 doesn't support 1440p. it supports 1080p and 4k.

It's bug with the Samsung TVs. Turn to your cable or TV channel and it will still say it's in 4K even when it's displaying 1080p. Something about Win 10 messes the info bar up and you need to switch the TV off before it works properly again.

1. Uninstall GeForece Experience.

2. Use these settings in NVIDIA Control Panel.

I am using a Toshiba 40L5200 TV set as my gaming moniotor. Use HDMI for output from your grtaphics card. Do not use VGA.

Then there is nothing wrong here. What does it matter if the TV says it's 4K or 1080p?

It's just how most TVs are, even many 1080p Monitors will do this. But yes please understand that many 4k TVs simply will not support certain res such as 2k (1440p)

Well, if they do, it’s because NVIDIA scales the pixels from using the GPU as the display scalar rather than the display. In my case my TV can go up to 4906x2304....which results in really tiny unreadable text.

That being said, you really won’t notice much of a difference between 1920x1080, and 2560x1440 when gaming on a tv from 5 or 6 feet away.

It's not a bug in my case. Game or gpu doesn't change the active signal for some reason.

I want to change it like this [photos.app.goo.gl] and not like this [photos.app.goo.gl]

It supports. Proof is above.

Believe me, it's a huge difference of 55' TV. 2k is not far from 4k, but details are not perfect... But when I turn 1080p it looks awful.

Thank you a lot! Very grateful, but it didn't help for some reason, will try that again later. Thanks for the response :)

Sounds like some of your games are just using borderless fullscreen mode instead of exclusive fullscreen.

Yeah, guess you're right. But how should I disable it... I didn't find any .ini files to change that for Dreamfall.

Did you try setting the OS desktop to 1440p firstly, then launch game and change the game res to 1440p also?

Yes, it works, but I want to get it automatically... Thanks.

your thought helped me find a solution for Dreamfall - made a shortcut for .exe file and then in Properties write "-window-mode exclusive"
Now resolution of the TV changes inside of the game. :)

For The Long Dark same method worked until Last patch, now there's a guide with registry tweak + the solution above.

Maybe it's the Unity made game's problems.

Having the same issue with Shadow Complex. In 2160p, it works but I sometimes get below the freesync range (48 FPS). In 1440p 120hz, the freesync range works down to 20 Hz, so I coud have image always synced. Despite I set 1440p in game, TV still says 2160p and it starts tearing below 48 FPS. Surprisingly, 1080p works in 120Hz and freesync works perfectly.

The behaviour of this TV seems to me just random. Sometimes you have to alt+tab several times to actualy get the resolution and refresh rate you want. In this case, it doesn't help.

I recently had similar issues with those two games on my TV being used as a secondary display. All I did to fix it was going into the nVidia control panel and manually change the settings for those two games. I can't remember offhand what settings I used, but you might want to have a look there and play around a bit.
