Best Steam server to make full use of my 140MB/s download speed?
I changed to a new internet recently.
On Steam I can't get to reach the full 140MB/s speed that my ISP is actually providing me.

Is there a way to verify the speed of servers and choose the fastest one? If I do, is the download server also actually affect the game servers it assign me to when I start a multiplayer game in Left 4 Dead 2 multiplayer?

Thanks!

There's never a "best" one as the internet is not a straight line.

Just try several and see how good they are. You can even try others far away and sometimes get faster downloads. Start a large download to test it.

Steam's servers are only for downloads, not for games.

First off, you need to figure out whether you're getting 140MB/s or 140Mbps. 140MB/s is incredibly fast, over 1.1Gbps. 140Mbps should see downloads of around 17MB/s.

Yeah. Tried a few and still can't find.
Maybe some here know a fast one and that's why I ask haha. Ideally a server in North America.

I'm on the East Coast and use South Korea very often.

Distance has nothing to do with it.

Try them all.

And how much you get most of the time at Max?

I have 1000 Mb/s internet speed (Gigabit) and never get much past 20 mb/s on steam (sometimes over 30 but rarely). On Epic game store I get 70-80 mb/s constantly every time. Not sure why steam downloads suck so much. Even chose the city I'm in. Tried 20 different steam regions and never get much past 20 with occassional bursts over 30. I have a PCI-e flash storage capable of 2000 mb/s write speed so disk is definately not bottleneck

South America was doing far better than and EU or NA server the last few days for me.

Columbia was the best peaking at ~720 mb/s out of the full gb.

And there were issues around the DC area this month.

I just did exactly this and got 570mb+ after switching from several East Coast servers and getting 40-60mbs MAX... definitely something wrong with their East Coast servers.

i don't even get a mb

My copy/pasta...

Read and try everything...

Programs Which May Interfere with Steam

Spyware, Malware, Adware, or Virus Interfering with Steam

Troubleshooting Network Connectivity

Try all download servers until you find one with speeds you are happy with.

There are over 130 to try.

Any server near me was slow as dirt. Nearest does not always equal faster.

Today, Vancover was better for me. Yesterday, Seattle was better (odd, ain't it?). Btw... I'm on the East Coast.

Also consider traffic.

Simple answer - popularity.

Steam is FAR More popular than Epic. So Epic servers are less congested, and will therefore have better speeds on the whole.

Simples.

This is precisely why you do the "region dance" with download servers.

My rule of thumb that I always point out to others is simply this -
If you think you can get more, try the other side of the world where a country's population is liable to be asleep. I typically go for a country that is at that time locally about 2 am.

Works like a charm. You can equally benefit from tweaking further by choosing a country whose population is more spread out or lesser on the whole.

Even non congested servers aren't pushing full sspeed.

Steam isn't pushiong more than quarter of what I should get.

I should get much more than 100Mbps.

Well then, what other tests have you done to eliminate things?

There's a number of things you can still do, from checking to see if there's any software (like security software) limiting Steam for some reason.

Orchecking your steam settings to make sure the bandwidth is set accordingly.

Lastly, do bear in mind that if you're in the US especially, certain crappy ISPs LOVE to throttle steam and will even lie to you about it (Comcast for example).

RJP Sep 14, 2020 @ 4:17pm
I think its more likely that ISP's are throttling as I would expect to get very fast speeds in my local city which has a steam server in the middle of the night, which I don't. It literally stops at the same speed all the time all day, no matter what time, while I can download at GIGABIT speeds from many other locations. Right now it's around 30 MBIT which is 10 MBIT faster that a few months ago but it's capping right at 30 as of SEPT....that tells me throttling by my local ISP (Xfinity)....as steam download speeds always stop at even number divisible by 10...which is mostly likely to be used when capping speeds at an ISP level.
