Try anything by Choice of Games. Only thing I could get to run on my laptop with similar specs.

the half life series are story oriented first person shooters
being quite old games, they will run pretty well on your pc

Dota 2, one of the best optimized most in-depth games on steam, you'll probs get at least 30 FPS.

Do you use some kind of software to run it smoothly?

Chances are high that any kind of software which "makes your PC run smoothly" is just snake oil.

2D games, old games and light weight games.

- Some of the final fantasy games
- Elder scrolls games like morrowind
- The old Dungeon siege games
- Chrono trigger
- Graveyard Keeper
- The Secret of Monkey Island

speaking of old games, well, stylistically old, check those specs, can't beat em. best 4x strategy I ever played in my life.

No, it's all Choose Your Own Adventure style games. No graphics card needed. My laptop is really bad.

One of the best games ever made. Runs on anything that has Windows. As far as making games run smoother, make sure all drivers and the operating system are fully up to date.

Also, make sure no software, such as antivirus or others, are messing with Steam and games.

It says for anything Windows (older operating systems are mentioned) but it runs on newer operating systems fine. Sometimes, older games need compatibility mode enabled, but they can be made to work otherwise or as so. I have played it on Windows 7 for years, and never had any issues.

But of course, you make a good point to also help the OP. Always do research and look at the minimum specs on the store page for any games, before buying them.

Thanks.
