Moving a game isn't working properly, and Steam is trying to redownload it
Windows 7 Ultimate N 64 bit SP1

I tried to move Fallout 4 from 1 drive to another, by copying the files, telling Steam to uninstall, and then telling steam to install to the place where I put the files. Instead, it decided to put it on that drive, but in a completely different folder, thus trying to download all 25GB all over again. I don't want it to download all 25GB when it's already on that drive.

I told it to go to "G:\Games", which has a "Fallout 4" folder that it should notice.

And it put it in "G:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\", which now has a Fallout 4 folder and it's trying to download Fallout to it.

How do I make Steam do what I want?

Why? Why did you do this?

the proper way.

I found several different ways to do this, and that there used to be a move local files button. Didn't come across this while searching.

After reading the article, it doesn't tell you how to move a specific game, just the whole thing. It seems that I have games on multiple drives, and Fallout 4 just happened to be the biggest, so I tried to move it.

What a kludge, why did they get rid of the move button?

They didn't get rid of the move installation button. It's where it has always been on the "Local Files" tab in the game properties.

I would have sworn that support article once had the information...

I haven't been able to find the instructions but it is as simple as Dagnabbit says.

I mean.... if I were gonna go troll someone it would be Linux users about how the community never uses the GUI, not how to move a game in Steam.

I looked at several other games, and they were all missing the button too.

Zoinks! You've taken a wrong turn.

Let's split up, gang. If you're looking for an image, it's probably been deleted or may not have existed at all.

that's all I get trying to view your image.

I told Steam to uninstall, and then told it to reinstall. This time it detected that I had put the files where it wanted them, and is now validating them.

I suspect the button might not be there because I'm on Win7? Pretty lame, but sounds like something a developer would think up.

I guess you can put the games where ever you want, as long as it's where Steam wants them (paraphrase of Henry Ford). That also sounds like something a developer would think up.

Right click on an installed game in library -> Preferences -> Local files -> Move install folder.

Sounds like you might have some other problems there if you don't have it showing. Or are you trying to move a game that isn't installed? You did mention that you uninstalled the game.

The picture is still there when I go to the URL again, even in another browser. Basically, it's the same thing that was posted, but does not have the "Move install folder" button.

I was trying to move the install folder of a game that was installed. But there was no button like I saw on some articles and the screenshot above. It's not rocket surgery to understand. I don't know why it's not there, just that it is not there.

Are you using a skin for Steam? Have you locked the client to the old UI?

Just a quick bit of advice about what you were originally doing :

Sounds like you might have been trying to move files and folders around with Steam open. If you ever try to move files and folders manually, as it seems you did from the OP above, then you need to make sure Steam is closed and not running.

Not really useful now, as you apparently figured out the original issue, but just for future knowledge.

Brah. Come on. Don't hit me with that weaksauce. I know that you have no way to know that I know a thing or two, but damn.

To move a game to other drive there few ways, before that you need to do this 1st. Top left of Steam click click on Steam > Settings > Downloads > Click on button Steam Library folder, now add your new library folder on the other drive, so Steam knows you have another spot for your games.

Option 1 - Close Steam 1st, then move these two things, the game .acf files that's found in the Steamapp folder, and the game folder that in the common folder, move them to the other drive, ensure .acf files goes exactly in the Steamapp folder on the other drive, and the game folder goes into the common folder on the other drive, then delete the .acf, and game folder on the drive you don't want it on, as you don't want multiple copies of the same things across multiple drives. After you have moved your game, launch Steam.

^This.

Option 2 - What Yasahi has posted.

Option 3 - Use the backup feature for the game, then unpack it and select your other drive you want to unpack it to.
