Wnat my money back.
Been dealing with failed steam client installs for two months. sick of it. either post some SPECIFIC steps to get this to work or refund my money. You keep directing me to very general "turn off your antivirus and firewall" bs and nothing has worked. All i can tell you is most of the files end in an underscore and I don't think my AV or Firewall is causing that. I have done at least 30 different downloads and installs. It's just endless. Steamui.dll failed to load fatal error. I can't read it again. It's sickening. No one can fix it, even you guys.

"You" is not here. This is a user forum and this is where we help each other. (EDIT...correction. Valve may see this, but they hardly ever reply here.)

There is surely a way to fix your problems with Steam, and this is the right place if you want help.

Security processes are suspect to that error, as you can easily forum search for it and get many results.

EDIT....For example :

Been there done that. Does exactly the same thing in safe mode so I can't confirm that it's AV or Firewall or anything. Why do all the files (Most) end in a underscore? I have WX. I use the standard stuff. Defender/Firewall and Malwarebytes. Off or On nothing changes. that is a pretty standard setup and the programmer need to provide a detail for how to fix it with those system extensions. It's very frustrating to have a $4000 machine here reliant on crap software I guess. Sorry.

You can only run Steam in safe mode, but it won't update without "with networking" enabled.

Hardware is totally irrelevant, if there is a software conflict causing issues with Steam installation.

1. Take screenshots of all of the programs you have installed on your computer. Control panel then programs/programs and features. (Windows 7,8,8.1) or "apps" (Windows 10 click "Start" (Windows icon on bottom left))

2. Click Windows Start and type in msconfig and run that resulting process. Go to the services tab and check the box on bottom "Hide all Microsoft services". Take screenshots of all that is left.

3. Then go to the startup tab on top of that same window (Task Manager in W10). Take screenshots of all that there also. Expand the header on the left so we can see all the details of the process name. (small window, so do the best you can) Don't forget to scroll down if needed and get everything in the shots, please.

Post all the links to the above screenshots here, using a file hosting site such as imgur.com, which is free to use.

Regarding the under score _ could you upload an image of what you see?

Most searches point to infection somewhere

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie9-windows_7/why-does-internet-explorer-replace-with/7cec07db-9392-4064-9eb0-f1be6a158a7b

But stick with TGO's suggestions first.

The helpful Bear is absolutly right, as it surely can be an infection.

Also, go ahead and post your system information, please. Need to know if the OS is 32 or 64 bit (Windows 10, right ?) and need to know the motherboard that you have.

Since you said it is an expensive system, I guess it was custom built. If you bought it prebuilt, we need to know the exact model and model number of it. Identify the exact computer that you have, please.

Helpful post by the good fauxtronic, as always.

Also, there are programs like CCleaner, which have a "monitoring mode" feature. If this is enabled (as it is by default installation and runs automatically on boot by default), it directly conflicts with Steam and games, as we have seen here.

Yes, this is not an issue while in safe mode (with networking). BUT...when you boot into a normal Windows boot, that's when it becomes an issue.

So I normally suggest staying all the time in safe mode with networking, while trying to install, update, and test Steam client issues. As long as there is not an infection, of course. That "might" not be an issue in a safe boot, but making sure there is no infection is of course never a bad idea. I doubt it is, but we try to cover all the bases here when helping others.

Ntoe this also happens when users are not on the latest service pack or latest patches. This is especially so becaues for some inexplicable reason people are on WIn7 but not Win7SP1 and such.
The Giving One 13 NOV 2018 a las 15:31
If OP honestly has had this for 2 months, that's very unfortunate, as the community here surely could have helped resolve the issue, or found the cause, in a much shorter time.

OP, you should have posted here a long time ago, unless you did and I am unaware.

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess I'll try fighting with this again today. My system is custom and has run steam for several years without issue. WX64 fully up to date. It is an ASUS Maximus Formula VI, Haswell I7, GTX780, 16G Ram, Plextor NvME pcie. I usually run CCCleaner but have it uninstalled. I also have the passive install of MBAM, not premium live monitoring. I only use Defender AV/Firewall and it appears that there are some features of that that can't be completely turned off. I put the firewall down during the install. Virus scans by MBAM and Defender show no infections or PUPs. Everything other than this works great.
So I'm going to remove CCleaner and MBAM and try this again. Even after removing Steam and a CC reg clean regedit shows there are still a lot of references to Steam in the registry that remain. I keep all games files on other drives, except the game I'm currently addicted to goes on the PCIE SSD which is Overload.
So i guess it's confirmed that the underscores are definitely part of the problem if not all of it. Not sure a picture is needed, just to say that in the packages folders and others there are hundreds of files ending in the underscore.
I've also tried the boot option that SAYS it disables early loading antimalware with no luck either. If you guys need to see the task manager processes and services windows I guess I can work of getting snapshots of those.
But it does seem that my system is pretty standard with no additional AV stuff and I run script blockers on my browsers etc, and my web surfing and email habits are pretty responsible so I just don't get a lot of threats or infections anyway. And thanks again, I guess I didn't realize there could be so much help available here, I better listen to it if this is ever gonna work again. There's just a lot of crap on the web about fixing this and none of it seems to work for me.
nxindy 15 NOV 2018 a las 9:42
So just tried another install with the download through Edge instead of FF. Same issue. When I run steam.exe as administrator inside the window it creates a .crash file immediately and then eventually a .ntfs_transaction_failed file that comes and goes twice. Updated failed and fatal error steamui.dll failed to load. this is fun...
nxindy 15 NOV 2018 a las 11:16
Another 4 hours and nothing. Giving up. No program should require this much jacking around to get it installed on a standard Windows computer. If Valve can't provide a detail on how to get their program to run correctly then I guess they just don't. There has to be a reason why the files won't decompress that they need to deal with. Is their any other way to run the games I want to run? I really only play one at a time in single player mode. Do I really have to have steam to run someone else's game?

THE FIX!! This is an issue related to an NvME PCIE SSD upgraded computer. I upgraded to a Plextor PCIE SSD a little over one year ago. At that time I simply cloned my Corsair System SSD to the Plextor and moved on, never actually needing to install directly to the Plextor. I had noticed Steam client update failures for months but ignored them because other than that, everything worked fine. After two months of failures I did a very simple thing. Installed a new copy of Steam onto an internal storage HDD into a root level folder called Steam. Then I just moved that folder to the Plextor SSD (system), threw away the desktop shortcut from the install and made a new one to the moved files and VOILA, IT'S WORKING! This might be a very specific problem though. Since my system drive is a clone, it may have something to do with the way Macrium cloned to the new drive, although I see no other issues, but I wouldn't know what to fix anyway. Might be a strange path or something. So I can't confirm whether a clean Windows install directly to the NVME SSD would result in the same issue occurring. Thanks everyone for the help and I apologize for broadcasting my frustrations in the user form. I would add though that when I originally installed Steam it was directly to a Corsair SSD system drive with no issues.
