Steam games lose track of controller intermittently.
A problem has popped up in the last couple days for exclusively Steam game (tested on Monster Hunter World, Nier Automata, and Dark Soul 1 and 3) where every 3-5 minutes, the controller I'm using (tested PS4 and X360 controller, both wired, not wireless) simply lose all input. No buttons or joysticks work, and whatever the last command was will continue, so you go running in circles or off a cliff to your extremely frustrated doom.
There is no disconnect noise, no notification, and the LED's in the PS4 controller stay on. After about 5-7 seconds, I get control back.
I tested Overwatch (Blizzard client) and The Witcher 3 (GOG client) and had absolutely zero issue. Both controllers are just plug and play with no third party software.

Has anyone else encountered this? I'm ready to throw a fist through a wall here.

I'm having the same issue right now. My Xbox360(wired) controller was working fine until yesterday, but today since I installed Death Gambit I'm having this exact issue, except in my case I don't regain control at all, the last input just remain stuck until I close the game, and after that Steam simply wont recognize the controller, even if I disconnect/reconnect it. I also tried with my Switch Pro controller and the same thing still happens.

Join the beta if you're not using it, if you are then try opt-out.

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta#announcements/detail/1706188320728546746

Report a bug: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/864957817327818370/

If nothing works then disable the controller stuff steam uses via the controller settings, should work fine for xbox controllers.

I opted out of the beta and it seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the help!

I also opted out of the beta and it went back to normal. Something must have changed in the last couple days that doesn't play nice with controllers. Thanks a million, Forcen!

Did you try the latest latest beta before you did? You should report this as a bug if it keeps happening on the latest beta, if they don't know then the problem will just come back when they go out of beta.

My problem was fixed by opting out of the beta client. Give that a go first.

I was never in the beta client.

Try opting in then?

Find the controller.txt in the steam log folder and see if you can find an error that matches the time of your problem.

I will try that.
controller.txt logs nothing of interest in the moment when the disconnect happens.

You should still give your experiences from this bug, what controller for example?

Sorry about that! It looked like I was the last one with this problem.
Yeah, Switch Pro controller. Tested with 2 controllers and 2 different Bluetooth dongles. Problem happens in-game or in the desktop or Big Picture mode.

The log didn't say anything at all? it could be a windows issue. You could try this: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bluetooth_log_view.html

if it happens with the beta then report a bug: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/864957817327818370/

The log says a lot of things, but it does not add any new line when the connection is interrupted.
Thanks for the suggestion, but that program only logs arrivals and leaves of bluetooth devices. It doesn't log what happens to an active connection.
