Phone number is for the Steam Authenticator Authorization or something.
For logging in, confirming trades 'n stuff like that..

I have the phone authenticator allready since I wanted to be able keep trading CS:GO items without waiting 15 days (which this **** company has ruined anyways since items are locked for 14 day now... great)

The mobile thing doesn't help me here. I need to enter a german adress and phone number to buy games using my wallet money.
Idk why steam needs another number from me but I don't like it
Gonna try if my mobile number works

really annoying but my mobile adress worked so I am happy

still stupid
but I guess it is not steams fault but our great leaders

also the lock on the items after a trade is still steams fault and extremel stupid for someone who likes trading
and scamming still happens

Digital purchase, Valve has its main seat in the USA so they fall under this new tax law and have to provide these information to the government.
Not much they can do if they dont want to break the law.

You shouldn't be using 90% of the internet if privacy really is your top concern. And it's only going to get worse going forward.

Well I know
but it is kinda sad
In theory governments could protect their inhabitants from data hungry companies but in reality they are the worst creeps of them all and build the laws step by step that lead to complete surveillance

So curious question here, coming from the UK, since before i never had to worry about this but now that its hit, its making me super stressed and worried. Assume i want to buy a basic game, example Planet Zoo, and i have to fill out the info, would a name and city be alright, since i don't feel happy adding address and phone number?

I haven’t actually bought anything since the change, but I assume you must fill out all the information, not just part of it. Filling out bogus info could potentially cause your account to be locked so I really wouldn’t recommend it.

That completely sucks now, i feel slightly robbed by this, was looking forward to buying some games in the sale, now i can't. Might wait a week and see if Steam gives a official announcement about this or if any slight changes/modifications are made. Thanks for the info anyway.

well adding a phone number is necessary

I couldn't BUY the game without a phone number

really stupid

[Edit] I just want to mention that I have bought something this night. Since I had allready spent my 20€ on a card, I wanted to use it
I took my mobile number which is already used for steam authentificator
not adding a number is no option
you can't buy games without
