Game wont stop running even after shutdown pc overnight
bought human fall flat and started it up yesterday for first time, Before i could even play a game kid wanted something else from me so i exited out of it through the main menu. It has never stopped running since! I looked for any related tasks and found none. I tried uninstalling it, steam wont allow it while running. Tried verifying integrity of files, steam won't allow it while running. Tried exiting steam, when i came back still running. Tried shutting computer down and leaving it off for about 5 minutes, on reboot it was STILL Fing RUNNING! Turned machine off overnight, it is still running!

Steam support sucks now, there is no place to get help for something like this, and though this is clearly steam issue they have not gotten back to me for a trouble ticket I placed over 24 hours ago. And i am certain based on their support page they are going to tell me it is the games problem when/if they ever respond.

Hoping someone out there has some ideas on how to fix this. Pretty please.

you defo turned machine off and not just put into sleep / hibernation? If you've gone into task manager (ctrl + alt + del) scroll down find the process, right click and end task, does it let you uninstall it?
Natural Causes Nov 26, 2019 @ 2:56pm
turned it completely off several times, even over night. Not sleep or hibernate. There is no task in task manager. I have the game on my other machine because my kid plays it, that's the reason i got it, to play with him. The task is for the game is called human and it is the only new task when the game starts, i have no human task. I even tried uninstalling it through windows, it doesn't exist because steam apparently let me uninstall enough of it that it doesn't show up.
Start windows in safe mode maybe helps getting around it

You said you have it on another machine, so maybe it is a family sharing issue or you have it running on that machine instead ? Sorry if I misunderstood you.

I did a quick look in the game's forum, and I don't see anyone else posting about this issue, so it must be a local problem, surely.

No family sharing, did they make that where you can play together?

Currently doing a system restore to before game was installed, so responding through phone app. Next step I am thinking about booting in ubuntu and completely remove the game.

Not sure if that game supports family sharing or not, but when I saw you mention your child and the "other" machine, I guessed that family sharing might be involved. If I am mistaken, just please ignore that.

If it helps, Steam for Linux is here :

What operating system are you currently seeing this problem in ?
Natural Causes Nov 26, 2019 @ 3:35pm
Windows 10

Sorry if I seem short, I am just really frustrated, but I am very much appreciative of any and all suggestions at this point.

Still not done with system restore, but I figure if this doesn't work I will boot ubuntu from a thumb drive. The only reason is I know that way I will not be stopped from manually deleting the game folder in steam.

Also steam finally responded with their canned "if a game says it is running when you try to start it, simply kill it in task manager" response" they didnt even read the email saying steam says it is running and I want it to stop saying that. I cant even try running it now as steam hides the run button behind a stop button that does nothing. I even sent them screenshots of my task manager showing it is not running.

If you run Windows in safe mode, as the good Muppet suggested above, there should be no way that game is then running.
Natural Causes Nov 26, 2019 @ 3:39pm
Ok, I will try safe mode next then. If this restore ever finishes

While you are in safe mode, it might not be such a bad idea to scan for any malware, using something good such as Malwarebytes. Scan as intensively as you can, and enable all options in the scan.

It's not something silly like it's trying to install an update / download for the game?
just looked at the steam page (have game too) and looks like there's an update out for it.. was released today looking at the page.
click on the downloads at bottom of steam window and hit the X next to it if it's downloading or qued.

It was not trying to update.

But i have good news, the system restore worked. Can't believe i had to go to that extent. Now, i have uninstalled it. So, do i reinstall and see if it works this time or persue my money back even though it says i have 8 hours played though it was really only 2 minutes?

Personally, I would be more concerned as to why this happened, and from what you now said, I have to further strongly suggest scanning for malware. If a system restore did work, that still might include the possibility of something causing this that could return.

You have to take into account not finding other posts about this in the game's own forum. Often enough, if you don't see others posting about something so important and impacting such as a game running all by itself, then it's probably not a Steam issue, but an issue on your end somewhere.

As to the refund, you can ask, but your initial reply will probably be no, as you have too much playtime now, regardless of this being the cause.

There is another way you can ask, when you are over the limits for refunds, but again, I would be first worried most about why this happened and what caused it.

I did a malware scan, i was malware free.

I think this is a problem with the new steam library features actually. The game was not running, steam just thought it was. I think i did the perfect sequence of events with the perfect timing to get some flag in steam to not reset. because it was running steam could not update, so it just never got reset. I would not be surprised to find we have more of these for different games pop up in the next few weeks.

I have never seen a case here where the playtime increases when your computer is shut down and turned off. I honestly don't even see how that is possible.

And again, I did not search extensively but just had a quick look, but I did not see one case of this in this game's own forum.

I am not trying to accuse you of anything at all. Just making the point that it's the same library for everyone that has the most recent Steam client. It's the same Steam.

So the fact you don't see hundreds or thousands of threads of people saying their games are running all by themselves, has to speak volumes in this case.
