Steam is still working on my Windows Vista?
I can still use Steam on my Windows Vista (only using it because I have nothing else and not a lot of money to just throw out of the window). I can still run games and chat with friends. Shouldn't it be shutting down?

If Valve is indeed going to pull the plug completely it will likely be done in the coming days.

There are other free alternatives to Windows which run great on old low-end machines such as Lubuntu or Linux Mint. You shouldn't be running Vista anymore for various reasons.

I also found steam to still be functioning on vista ultimate. I logged on today, 2/2/2019 and played some games w/out any issues.

As long as you surpress updates, you can keep Steam running on XP and Vista for years. Best to keep a copy of a 2018 version saved somewhere though, just in case, the update that locks you out, slips through at some point.

1. What's your system specs?

2. You can use the unlicensed Windows 10 for free. Nothing stopping you from getting it, or using it, Microsoft is giving the unlicensed Windows 10 completely free. I suggest check it out.

3. When they say they're dropping support, they don't mean they're going to block you, it means that when they do an update, and the client ends up breaking on you, and not able to function properly, then there's nothing you can do as they drop support, they won't help you; they'll tell you to change to a supported OS, and that's about it.

I ended up switching to a Windows 10 laptop. It's my sister's old laptop that she left here ages ago and I didn't even know it still existed. Lock this.

Well, ten to fifteen years ago, there were countless websites and programs, that offered free browser toolbars. In various ways, the new Windows version feels like it is born from the same spirit.

I think Linux fit more in that description honestly.

O.o

Time slip?

It is still January 22nd, 2019 here.

Valve is still working on the new UI and updates. Those use features that are not supported in Vista. Chances are Steam will not work on Vista after they are released, but for now, it still works.

Linux doesn't have to be free as-in gratis. There are plenty of paid Linux-based operating systems.

When the Linux people talk about free they are talking about freedom, a copy of the source code is made available to you with your purchase or download are are free to do whatever you want with the software; change it, sell it, copy/share it etc..

I'm talking about how there's a whole ton more versions, and distros all over the place, in comparison, which why I say I think Linux fit more in that description honestly.

I hope the same advice also goes for the current 'end of Windows 7 support' issue.

I can't be sure that how long keeping the old Steam Client online (by suppressing client updates at the same time) will last without switching to offline mode entirely.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
