Steam and EB games not helping with already redeemed gift card

So I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how I should proceed here.

I was given a $100 Steam gift card for Christmas. The card was purchased from EB games on the 17th of December. I peeled off the back of the card and the last two characters of the code were destroyed, so I could not use the code. I followed Steam's usual process when that happens: I submitted a ticket with a picture of the card and explained the situation.

They didn't get back to me until the 27th in the afternoon, at which point they told me that the code had been redeemed on the 27th at 7:50am. They therefore can't help me and I need to contact the seller.

I contacted EB games and they told me they can't help since the code has been redeemed.

This whole thing is sketchy as ♥♥♥♥ and makes no sense. There's no way the code was compromised before sale and used 10 days later. The card showed no evidence of tampering. The code was destroyed when I looked at it so nobody had the code until the steam support guy looked it up in their database to see what its status was. Obviously I have no evidence to back this up, but the most likely scenario to me is that the support guy used the code, but I'm not going to push that angle too hard.

In any case, I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered a similar issue or if they know what my next steps should be.

It falls on EB and not Valve if you purchased it at EB.

Your not ment to peal anything... your ment to scratch the back of the card.

Steam support might be able to get your code back. Make a ticket.

If not, Go to EB, they should be able to help you.

I misread it. My bad. Perhaps someone got lucky with a random code they added and got yours.... im not sure... But if its already redeemed then i think your all out of luck sadly. Buy another and get it on steam faster is all i can think of...

There are ways to re-apply that stuff to make it look new. Saw a guy at a Best Buy doing it.

Even then the card was bought on the 17th and used on the 27th.... the card needs to be activated at the register before it can be used.

I don't see how, seeing as the codes are covered by the silver strip.

OP:
Sounds like someone else had access to the card and guessed the last two numbers. Most likely they either they got it from the physical card or from the screenshot on your computer.

He had a small machine he used to re-apply the strip. Looked funky to me but no one else noticed.
