[Solved] Steam Client Stuttering every 12 seconds
Hi,

I'm having issues with the steam client freezing for ~2 seconds every ~12 seconds. This is something I've only started noticing when trying to play Resident Evil 2 as at first it become an issue when I tried playing the game. On further investigation, it seems that it's happening from the client as well.

I have been able to observe this behavior from any screen with either a scroll bar of buttons which highlight (BPM), the easiest example is just going to the library and scrolling up and down the page where I'll find that the client will just freeze for a couple of seconds and then resume, only to repeat in 12 seconds. This occurs in normal mode as well as big picture, at fullscreen or windowed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, giving admin privileges, disabling my AV, clearing web cache, deleting user settings and basically everything else I can think of and read. Haven't been able to fix.

Curiously I didn't have this behavior when playing the Resident Evil 2 demo a week back, so not sure if there's been an update since then or what, but its making all my games unplayable.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Ok, i was able to solve the issue - at least on my side - I opened steam with -console start parameter and could see that every few seconds it would to connect a controller and fail. This controller loading would abort with some error and probably casued steam to freeze for a few seconds.

I disconnected all usb devices but keyboard and mouse and bingo - steam runs smooth again.

I have the same issue. (or at least a very similiar one)
Not all games are affected (Ring of Elysium and Stellaris are fine, Factorio and Endless Space have the issue) Non-Steam versions of affected games are also fine (at least Factorio runs fine with standalone installer)

Sounds like other software might be negatively affecting Steam and/or the games.

There is an easy test to see if this is the case, with Steam only though.

Boot you PC into safe mode with networking, and log in and test Steam only. Browse the store, scroll up and down, check your library, etc. (although the scroll bar is buggy anyway)

Just use Steam in safe mode with networking and see if you notice improvement. If you do, start with this list :

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

Also, some antivirus programs have background processes that can still cause issues with Steam and/or games, even if you disable the parent antivirus itself. So this safe boot helps to find that out, if applicable.

EDIT......

@GlowingOrb

Your last post ninja'd mine here so I did not see it until I posted this. Thanks for the update to the thread.

Antimalware service executable may cause this which is linked to windows defender. Even Dvr option should be turned off in my opinion if you have Windows 10. There could be various other reasons why you get stuttering, such as intels speedstep which should be turned off, and your energy scheme should be on High performance. Or maybe it could be a steam related issue from their side or hardware problem.

Repeat every 12 seconds.

Turned out it was my 8BitDo being plugged in on Switch mode while it was charging and steam freaking the hell out about it. :lunar2019laughingpig:

Just wanted to add to this in case others find it searching for this problem. I have the USB 8bitdo Bluetooth adapter and that turned out to be the source when this randomly started happening (first noticed it in games, but then noticed it was even impacting Steam client just scrolling games list). Just unplugging and replugging the USB adapter fixed it (reboots did not).

Same issue and fix here. I have the 8Bitdo Wireless USB adapter (the brown one). Unplugging it fixed the stuttering on both Steam and Destiny 2. Thanks everyone!
