Transfer Entire Steam SSD to new PC
Hey All!

I have just built my new PC. In my "old" PC I have Steam installed on a totally separate SSD.

Can I simply put that SSD in my new machine, reinstall Steam into the same folder on that drive, and then use that as a basis to reinstall my games without having to DL them all again and copy/paste all custom content (CS:GO, L4D2 etc)?!

Or will trying to reinstall Steam into an already populated location cause problems/errors?

Thanks!

Hi,
should work as you described. Not tested it for myself, I normally install Steam to the default-location but configure the library to another drive. If I somehow change that drive I only have to add/change the library-path ...

Thanks, but in your example you are talking about games which have already been installed on the system, aren't you?

As this is a first time install on a new build Steam will have to "reinstall" all these games, I am hoping if the games data is already present in the install location that steam wont try to dl it all again and overwrite it but will simply acquire the files which are missing and create the reg keys for the installation.

You won't need to reinstal the games. I Would verify the game cache for each game though. That will have them checked and reinstall certain aspects as it would essentially be a fresh install on new hardware.

Rename the Steam directory, then install Steam on to the old drive, while in the new system, so not log in to Steam yet. Move the old Steam back and overwrite the files. This way everything is still there and you don't get any restrictions from being on a new system.

From my experiance, it won't let you install Steam in a directory where files already exist.

Why do you want to reinstall Steam? Why not using the Steam already installed?
