1 Unread chat message won't go away.

I had one guy in my friendlist who used to spam game invites so i blocked and unfriended him, so i assume that i didn't read one of his messages before deleting him so now notification is stuck and i can't get rid of it.

Try opening a chat tab on a web browser or your mobile device.

How I fix the stuck notifications is that I open up a chat by using the mobile app. Not sure if this is helpful in your situation, but try to bash random buttons with the mobile app and see if it works.

haven't trying bashing random buttions but opening chat in mobile app doesn't seem to work

i used the pc one and opened the unread message and typed something into then it went away.

Using the mobile always works for me, try clicking on each chat you have in the recent chat history, just had 2 today.

I know this is necro-ing but as this still is in the search results on Google, let me reply here.
Sometimes you must scroll up in the chat window to see the unread message. Just opening it won't remove the notification in that case. The Big Picture "fix" probably works for some people because the unread message is just seen further up so it is in the fullscreen chat but not in the usual chat window. Similar to opening in browser.

tl;dr: Real fix is to scroll up in the chat with the unread message until you find the message Steam hadn't delivered earlier.

Exit Steam use the bootloader right side near the time and date r/click it and exit then restart Steam

What i did was on windows, completely closed steam. (right click the little arrow next to internet connection on desktop, click steam, click exit.) re-open steam, and its gone! at least for me haha
