7.1 Surround vs Stereo

I just sold my old headset and i wan't to buy a new one, but i can't decide between 7.1 Surround or Stereo. When i go to other discussions i see alot of people recommending Stereo sound over surround. But when i check pro players gear most of them are using 7.1 Surround sound (these are pros from Fortnite, CS:GO and Overwatch) What do you guys think? What should i do, follow the community or the pro players.

Overwatch have atmos which offer some solid virtual 3D sound.

Professional players are also often sponsererd by hardware manufacturers. Anyone remeber the Fatal!ty series?

Stereo is good enough. Surround is just a set of smaller and inferior speakers per ear. Most decent games offer surround simulation which does a good job for locating sound sources. If you have a dedicated sound card, it will even offer an option for that.
