What are Gems used for in steam?

Mainly used for booster packs, you can sell or trade it as well.

Gems are more like a way for people who dont want to trade/sell their spare cards to get somethimg from them. But if you want to ise the market/trade, gems are pretry much pointless.

One good use of this feature is when you get duplicate items, and only want to keep one of them for making a badge, for example. Some don't use the market for trading, so they make gems out of these instead. I do this on my account.

Yeah, I don't think gems are worth the effort (IMO, it's better to just pawn off the cards you don't want and just outright buy/trade for the ones you need. Although I'd say turn at least one useless card into gems just for the badge :P).
