Steam says that I'm not in-game when I actually am.
This happens for any game I launch. My steam friends list still says I'm not in-game and I cannot invite friends. I can, through the steam friends list still join games, which is weird.

I have restarted steam, tried with multiple games and even reinstalled steam and it still hasn't helped. What do I do?

Go to your profile, choose "Edit Profile" , on the right you have a option "Privacy Settings".
Set "Game Details" to PUBLIC.
