Remember, dd-wrt is not an official firmware for a router and may cause issues.
I am using a stock router and have no issue with Steam or how many connections it opens (Nighthawk R6700).
I can however acknowledge that older dd-wrt firmware or the stock firmware (from 2015 i.e might be suspectible to krack, I do not trust d-link at all when they claim this particular model and firmware is safe from it) works fine. But using either is completely out of the question in terms of safety. The router is pretty good in terms of hardware.
So my options are either to buy a new router (which I am not going to do for a single service), turn off wifi and use the older dd-wrt firmware (which I am not going to do either). Use the stock firmware and turn of wifi (same as above, not a option).
Or I can figure out how this is done (because I know it can be done), and be done with it. If it takes longer to populate the server list when searching for servers, i'd rather have that than the other alternatives.
EDIT: Found a possible solution.
steam > settings > in-game > ingame server browser pings / second
Lowered it from 5000 server pings/minute to 1000. This ought to help. And if it does not. Well I'll go ♥♥♥♥ in a toilet.
